I used to think that, and for most things I agree that too much abstraction is bad. But then I started using jQuery. It's well done. It's like an 80k file download extra, even less possibly if you use cached file from a CDN, and it doesn't add too much overhead.

jQuery is the ultimate Swiss army sledgehammer of frameworks, it does everything but it has so many attachments that you can't find the one that you want to use for the tiny corner of its functionality you need.

We recently had to buy a load of them to put in people's houses after someone bought a field system that only sends data back to the office when connected to a dial up modem.
They are quite expensive.
