It's a bit unrelated, but I've been working on a little CP desktop gadget[^] that I plan to publish here sometime as an article... and I had a question. 
Are there any CodeProject API's for getting user notifications, or reporting messages/members?
The user notifications are more important, but the reporting would make the spam-detecting aspects of the application much easier to code.
At the moment the app uses a WebBrowserControl running in the background, refreshing every minute or so and then scraping the html for user notifications.
The human-approved reporting was going to use another WebBrowserControl and do some DOM invoking to click buttons and stuff.
API's would also consume less server resources.

Opening up the reporting system via an external API isn't something we're totally keen on at this point. It's a very large, scary can of worms.

IF you really want to write html code. then i would recommend using a simple ascii text editor such as notepad and type your own html tags. You really don't need a fancy editor.

However, many, many authors love WYSIWYG editors. Even I, occasionally, like seeing what I'm editing all neatly formatted occasionally too.

when using specialized HTML editors such as FrontPage the software will put it's own HTML tags. and that is the same for all HTML editors. If the programmer wants total control then use notepad and they can always open the HTML doc on a HTML viewer such as Firefox.

Not in my experience. I'm actually using FrontPage 2003 (Yes - FrontPage classic!) because it's so clean with it's HTML handling. Our HTMLArea based WYSIWYG editor doesn't often add tags. Obviously adding a paragraph or image will result in new tags being added, but they aren't unexpected tags.

Try adding <code>This is some code</code> inside a TD element in the editor. It strips it out.
Have you tried setting config.allowedContent = true;? That way, it shouldn't strip anything out. I've just tried with v4, and it doesn't strip out a <code> block within a <td> element.

A programming question would be "How do I do X". That would be unacceptable. However, "I can't do X because the stupid $#@! that was obviously written by blind monkeys on acid and never works no matter what I do even though I've not once looked at the manual or looked into the source code because I have better things to do, like blog about how crap X is" is considered on-topic and appropriate.

I've actually found that FCKeditor (the version before CKeditor) works better... there again, it might not like newer browsers -- but in any event, it doesn't muck things up quite as much. I know what you mean, though...

I've forked the code and added some event handler for the mode change (not pushed yet). What isn't clear to me is - are you want to use some existing code for content modification on mode change or something new? In both case I need more info...
Old case - how to call that code
New case - what exactly do you want to change between mode switches? (I saw the img problem, but there is more?)

I've just playing around and noticed that setting baseHref like this
CKEDITOR.config.baseHref = "http://www.codeproject.com/KB/miscctrl/gridctrl/"; removes the need for playing with image source on editor mode change! It can be always the simple myimage.jpg form...Consider it...

In relation to the fourth item in your updated list (about sensible HTML)...
I wrote this article http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/748790/Beginners-Guide-to-HTML-CSS-Part-of[^] using the new editor. At the end I just copied the html code from my local copy to CP. I didn't got any 'insensible' HTML on the way. There is something specific I have to look for (except the line break in copied code, which I see no)?

I found it very nice.
It never added extra lines between paragraphs (which happening me all the time with the current).
I liked the image insertion popup - it nice, clear and easy, also hyperlink creation is very nice...
The only thin I found different for the wrong direction is about the <code> block. I added it manually - as it's not on the toolbar (or I missed something) and when positioning the caret at the end of the line it was INSIDE the <code> block. It was a bit disturbing, but I'm sure that we can find a way to handle it...
In summary I can say that the new editor much more supportive, than the one we have today...

DVD was always Digital Video Disk, for a long time. Then a few years ago, it became 'Versatile'! VERSATILE????!!!?!
