Or to sum up nearly all of those points "Lots of parents are a bit sh*tty at the job".
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

I don't care if 10 yr. old use an iPhone.
I'm more concerned about the 22 yr. old douchebag texting in the car in front of me.
That loser is going to get me killed.

Surely it's the one in the car behind you that will get you killed.

Great, now you've got me really worried.

Actually it's probably the one coming at you from the side that's most likely to do serious damage. But inattention generally results in accidents due to not stopping in time, or going straight on at corners, and that's going to impact people in front of the person not watching.

I had one of those yesterday. If I hadn't been so drunk I would have wound down my window and told him how much of an inconsiderate a***hole he was.

Coming back from the school run this morning, I noticed in the on coming traffic that a lot of people appeared to be texting or using phones rather than looking at the road. Okay, they were moving at the standard 0.1 mph, but still.

10a) they didn't have them when I were a lad and it never did me any harm
Seriously though, I think technology everywhere all the time is bad for everyone, but children particularly because that's when you're supposed to be learning what is normal, learning self control and developing a feel for the world, so they'll be much less good at self-regulating usage.
I played something like 10 hours of gaming over the weekend though and now I feel 'sufficiently sleep deprived to affect grades' and 'addicted' as well

Not just hand-held.
Has no one noticed the increase ADD/ADHD/ABCDEFG/ETC/Autism pretty much coincides with all the teach-your-children-to-read-before-the-can-use-the-toilet books and videos and games and crap?
You over-stimulate someone and bad things happen.

I rather think it is the diagnosis that is increasing, not the incidence.
back in teh day someone who is now diagnosed with an acronym was probably just 'a handfull' or plain 'naughty'

Except all the "hyper-active" (etc) kids I knew growing up grew up to be normal adults, no long-term ill effects.
Maybe the box they're trying to put everyone in is just too small these days.

I've basically disconnected as much as possible - after having been wired to the core for a decade.
No video games, no network connectivity at home, no cable/satelite tv, no smart phone, etc.
Somehow, I'm still always busy, and somehow, I absolutely do not miss those things (except when I am in a hurry and need a piece of information - like... oops, I need a "schedule A" form to finish my taxes).
I feel much more able to cope with the necessities of life for not wasting so much time with electronics. My kids are aware of what gaming is - via friends of course - but have different hobbies instead. They are fun in a different way, but allow my kids to excel in certain areas of life. I feel I'm a much better Dad as well, as I don't have to feel guilty about shooing away the kids so I can hit max level on that new MMORPG, or give complete concentration to the RTS. Instead, all my hobbies and freetime are spent with the kids. I am satisfied.

Your description reminds me of my dad when I was growing up. (Mum too).
I don't have kids yet, but I hope to be available like that when I do.

The idiocy of this article can be wrapped up in point 2 which begins "Technology use restricts movement..."
Not may, but an absolute statement. Never mind that a tablet allows movement, but reading also restricts movement, as does sitting in church, playing board games, eating dinner, sitting in a classroom, lying in a crib, taking a nap, being in a car seat, sitting in a swing....

Movie Quote Of The Day
Peace isn't merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice.
Which movie?

|
|

Judge Dredd.
On seconds thoughts...maybe not. Plenty of justice goin' on...
