Reports I saw indicated that Malaysian airport security didn't bother to do the bare minimum needed to verify if the passports were valid, because if that had they'd've found out they were stolen. In between molesting children and the elderly the theatrical security agency also does the things that would be all that a non-elephanted security service would do.

What I'm curious about is if the failing was institutional (there was no verify policy in place), due to incompetence/indifference (the checkers couldn't be bothered to do their job), or due to corruption (bribed to look the other way).
