The latest figures come from Canalys, an independent analyst firm which found Android’s dominance grew with the platform running on 79 percent (785 million) of the devices shipped in 2013, up from 68 percent in 2012. "Microsoft saw its platform gain a percentage point to 3%". W00t!

Which is why over the course of the 4.x version Google has been stripping almost everything but the dialer, lockscreen, and kernel from the OS itself and either putting them directly in the Google PLay store where they can be freely updated or in the Google Play Services middleware layer that's silently updated and is needed to make almost anything above the kernel work.

Thanks to collaboration with the team at VirusTotal, this Process Explorer update introduces integration with VirusTotal.com, an online antivirus analysis service. When enabled, Process Explorer sends the hashes of images and files shown in the process and DLL views to VirusTotal and if they have been previously scanned, reports how many antivirus engines identified them as possibly malicious. Hyperlinked results take you to VirusTotal.com report pages and you can even submit files for scanning. This tool is so good Microsoft should buy them! Oh, wait...

We are offering to buy a new computer with a modern browser for any of our customers who are stuck with IE7. We determined that it would cost us more to support a browser from 2006 in 2014 and beyond than it would to help our clients upgrade their legacy hardware.
I suppose that's one way to deal with the long tail of legacy support.

1) A 12 year old single core p4 with 512mb of ram running winXP is too slow to support a fancy modern web site in any browser.

So much for Intel’s bid to get hip with our app-filled times: the company is shutting down its consumer-facing AppUp, its app store for Windows-based PC apps. “The world’s largest app store that nobody’s ever heard of,” in the words of AppUp boss Peter Biddle, a description that in hindsight may have been tempting fate.

The per device variation in ranking was large enough that I'd like to see at least 3 or 5 runs of each done on one of the devices to see if the test itself was consistent before drawing any conclusions.
