If it isn't inflamed already it will be.
And there is no repair option AFAIK that can be in direct contact with the nerve without problems. But development is fast also in this area, so I might of course be wrong.

With a hole in the side as well it soon would be. Having been a fellow victim they can go from an irritation to ache to inflamed in very short order. A few years ago I boarded a plane in HK to head home to NZ, dozed off and woke about an hour later with a bit of an ache in a molar. 13 hours later in Auckland it felt like some b*****d was jamming a red hot needle through the tooth and jaw and into my brain accompanied by screeching violins. Inflamed does not really describe it. Not something I would recommend. I have never been so glad to have a dentist plunge one of those big f**k-off needles they use into my mouth and then drill the crap out of a tooth. Since then I've had two other root canals which were caught and dealt with early and were pretty much pain free, then last year I had another screamer.
You are one of the lucky ones this time!

I believe you. I went to the dentist because I figured it probably wouldn't heal itself . I have heard about toothaches setting in quickly, but what you are talking about is just scary quick.
I have an old filling in one of my molars that I need replaced next. I felt a pain a couple of weeks ago when I was eating chips - that stuff filled up the inside of the molar and when I bit down, it gave me quite a jolt. I haven't felt anything before or since, so I think I can drag it a little longer.

I had to have one ten or so years ago, because the filling was so deep that any hot or cold food was very painful. Alternative was to have an extraction. It wasn't too bad - awkward rather than painful - and it kept the tooth, which is still there now.
It may depend on the dentist, but it wasn't a problem while it was being done, except for jaw ache from hold my mouth open for so long!

I wonder how the dentist is going to do it with my tooth. There is no cavity or filling to enter through from the top. The problem is the gums have receded, but I don't know if he can go in from the side and get the job done.

I treasure my ignorance of the arts of orthodontics, and remembering "Marathon Man" I am not inclined to research the subject!
Hope it goes well, but for me at least it was no problem, and the relief was immediate and permanent.

No luck there. They're going in from the top, and clean out the roots with tiny files.
And if you're having a hole in the side aswell I'm willing to bet on that you will need a dental crown. (done that)
You have my sympathies.

You are right, he went in from the top. He finished up an hour ago and there really was not a lot of pain. The anesthesia has almost worn off and I am still pain free.
In two weeks I have to go back in to get a permanent seal put over the hole on the side.

I had the procedure done about an hour ago. Like you said, I only have a bit of an ache in the jaw from keeping my mouth open. Other than that, it really wasn't bad at all.

Ensure you have an Endodontist performing the procedure and not your local dentist. If it is your dentist it would be like having your GP performing a knee reconstruction.

I am pretty sure that is what he is, but it's hard to know for sure. I had it done (in my second home) in Mexico and the doctors here just love using those long titles and this one had that title displayed all over the place.

Maybe they have a big problem with Bacon Butty thefts - and this way they just have to look for a telltale glow around the perpetrators teeth, tummy, and whatnot?
