A big reason is infrastructure. How do you process the transactions? How do you handle charge backs? What about customer service? Billing?
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc. have built all this up over decades. Discover was able to avoid many of the same mistakes the "pioneers" made, but their success was arguably built on having no-fees and cash back, both of which are common today. WIth the market so flooded with cards, issuing a completely new one would be pretty risky. (Besides, I'm sure Bank of England has a rebranded card and gets some of those transaction fees. I'm also surprised you'd think the profits would be fed back into the treasury and not bureaucrats' pockets.)

Christmas party[^]
So, are your companies having a Christmas party?
Once again I will be having a lavish affair - I might even allow spouses this year - but given it's just me I don't think I'll have to book ahead too far...
One company I used to work for had it's Christmas party in April: it just slipped and couldn't book it earlier one year, but stuck with it after that. It decided it was easier to book a nice place, it was cheaper and it made a good break for the staff at a dull time of year. Worked well.

Yeah here they gave it up doing something in December too... We have usually 2 or more company events throughout the year instead.

But at least April is in spring.
If I ever get crazy enough to run my own company I'll have the Christmas party in mid November as it's dark, rainy and depressive then.

I won't go this year as last year my boss touched me inappropriately at the Christmas Drinks. It's bad enough working on your own, but when that happens.
Mrs Wife is having a do at her place for all employees, spouses and children. She has also agreed that she will drive home.

Well the Big Boss will not be there, he'll be in the States that week so his deputy will be organising everything. That'll be Mrs Wife then.

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Our office Christmas party is at a local hotel.
Special discounted room were made available at £49.
The Premier Inn next door was £29.
A couple of weeks ago a colleague was looking at the hotel website and rooms were £20.
I got the cheapest deal, I'm not going.

Man walks into a bar.... with Google glass on his head. The management of that bar / restaurant ask the gentlemen to remove the device, which is their prorogitive however was not their policy. The owner of the restaurant had banned the glass products in another establishment he owned but had not yet made it policy in the current restaurant. The Glass wearer decided to debate this policy before leaving.
Now being a biased fan of Glass I would usually rule in the man's favour if he hadn't been a complete and utter Glasshole (yes I went there) about it. The man demanded, unreasonable, in a facebook post that the staff member be fired or her pay docked for following management wishes. Now my view on the situation is that Glass has an unfair prejudice just because of people's fear of being recorded by the devices. As the man was having a meal with his partner, he shouldn't of been distracted anyway, however this is just a symptom of information overload and shows what craving consumers we are.
Now I sat down for a meal with my girlfriend last night and forced myself to put my phone to the side and ignore the ever tempting notifications I think it's a good thing to fully concentrate on a loved friend or family member. Don't get me wrong, when I get my version of Glass I will bask in the glory of on demand information whenever I want it. Anyway that's my thoughts in a nutshell, check out the links below.
