Speaking of which, I haven't seen him around in a long time. Has his wife accidentally shot him while cleaning his guns?

Long time no see
It's a play on the phase "long time no see"
where "see" is the seat a bishop holds.

Mrs. Wife wants to transfer all her vacation piccies from her camera. I copied them from the USB card onto my PC. I found an oldish USB cable to connect her iPad to my PC and the explorer immediately recognises it as a drive. I can copy existing files from her iPad to my drive but for some reason I can't move them the other way. I'm really hoping I don't have to install iTunes to do what is a rare event. Email could work as she can save attachments but 1.2GB of photos isn't practical. I'd like to do it as simply as possible so does anyone have any suggestions what I can try? I don't mind paying for an app to do it but like I say, I don't want to install iTunes unless it's my absolute last option. Any ideas?

This is one of those scenarios that looks easy in theory, but in practice you have to get creative. Other than iTunes your best bet is Dropbox sync or using Bump[^]

This[^] is about the closest you'll get to real computer file-ops on an iproduct, but you'll probably have to bite the bullet and install itunes.
Rather than install itunes, though, you should be able to upload the files to Dropbox, then use the Dropbox app to download and hide them on your ipad.
Or, as someone else pointed out, avoid all the ridiculous workarounds and bloatware by upgrading to android.
I recently bought an android tab with mostly better specs than my ipad (e.g. the camera's not as good), for a quarter if the price, and the ipad has been sitting idle, ever since.
I would give it to a local school, but I wouldn't want to ruin some child's IT education.

Use a Cloud-Service which allows photo-sync to the iPad?

As far as I know the iPad gets connected as a digital camera device. (At least my old iPhone behaved like that). Windows only supports copying files from a camera onto the PC, copying to a digital camera doesn't work.
I'd guess nowadays the easiest way to bring them onto the iPad without iTunes is using the iCloud? I didn't use it, because it didn't exist when I had an iPhone, but most people I know sync the files like that.

If you want to solve this problem forever (So that she can do it herself), then buy the SD Card / Camera Connection kit.
I have the older one.[^] And it works great. Just insert the card or connect the camera, and it will import everything.
My purpose is to use my iPad as a backup device, whenever I travel I take daily backup of my DSLR's Memory card (You can't trust SD Cards, and You can't afford losing your pictures). So $30.00 is worth spending.
If you have the newer model then try this[^].

There are many file managers available for both iPhone and iPad. You can store any type of file in these applications and they support viewing of most common file types. I personally use File Manager Pro[^] but since this is one off thing you can try to find something cheaper. To copy files from PC to this application both iPad and PC must be on the same Wifi network. Simply launch the application, select the option to transfer files over Wifi and the application will provide you with a link. Open this link on PC and you will see a webpage which allows you to upload files. Once files are on iPad, you can choose to save them to camera roll.
