well, it was a two-seater (unlike the picture they used, which is the cockpit of a much more sophisticated beast) - a two-seater is actually pretty simple, anyone who can drive a car should be able to land it, with a bit of help

Besides. Would it have been a plane with a cockpit like in the picture there should have been a co-pilot who should have been able to take over.

The passenger had flown in light aircraft previously and had witnessed pilots at the comntrols so I imagine they had a bit of a feel for for the control surface feeback.
That said it is still amazing that they kept their calm to be able to land - the biggest problem is over control and in particular the manner in which the controls respond differently(they become more sluggish) as the aircraft's speed is slowed for landing.
