There are a lot of access roads leading to airports service areas and runways, usually they are all fenced off and locked.

And in all fairness, Fairbanks might not be such an important/strategic airport to have that high a security.

To my mind, this isn't a security issue, it's a safety issue, which has absolutely nothing to do with the prominence of the area served by the airport. I still believe this sounds like inept design of traffic flow around the airport.

Apple's mapping app obviously still has issues... there is no denying.

The other thing that struck me about the article is the apparent ease at which civilian vehicles could access the airport's taxiways and runways. We routinely get irradiated and molested going through security but anyone can just drive up to the planes? OMG | :OMG:
