Depend on my need I will purchase or rent the software.
Before that I will work with the trial version if I think it’s worth buying then I will purchase it.

I prefer to pay once and own forever; and with owning, have access to free updates and support (support at least for a priod to time).

I tried this model in the 90s, went broke. Think of the poor bugger on the other end of that deal, unlimited support forever, never again.
Then when you don't get all the support you want you scream like a little girl and abuse the crap out of the vendor, trash his rep on the interweb and wonder why you never get a reply to your support demand!
AAahhh don't push that button dammit!

if it is a software that i would use only once in a year or once in two years, i would rather pay for those months. Otherwise I would prefer to buy once and own it forever if it is in a reasonable price range...!

It might also depends on the company financial department approval.
Sometimes they prefer to pay more but only once, or the other way around.
At the end, as long as it fits my needs it's ok for me.
Support can also matter in this case because it can also vary.
Frankly in my case I never needed much support from the software I bought.

Agree in principal; but I've yet to actually find an application with a rent payment model when I only need it for a single one off use. Even then for a one-off task I'm a lot more likely to put up with a FOSS app with a stereotypically user hostile interface that only the apps author could love.
