You would normally declare something like this as
C#
string[] serial_numbers = new string[] {};
Note, however, that you've just declared a zero length array, so you would have to resize it (which isn't the most efficient operation) whenever you want to use it. There are many more efficient ways to save the data - and which one you choose depends on what you want to do with it. You could use a List<string> or a Dictionary of strings and readings - which one you choose depends on what the ultimate purpose is of the readings.
