not just because I have a 40h/week contract.
But I saw colleagues stepping out of line because of burnout. Colleagues I directly worked together with - which made me wonder when I'm about to go down.
So I changed some things, try to keep an eye on the time and took up another hobby to have a personal, private & active focus(archery).

Less than 4 hours. Hours are not scalable so I restrict them.
And when something is not scalable, makes it scarce and perceived value goes up. (from your perspective, and also your customer perspective)
Time's value behaves like every non-renewable commodities.
By "work" I mean hours exchanged to someone else against money.
I don't count the other 4-8 hours I spend on learning new things I like, these hours are for myself.

I get to play with a compiler and ide all day and the outfit I work for actually pays me for it! 
Lord, grant me the serenity to accept that there are some things I just can’t keep up with,

but just don’t have the damn bandwidth to handle right now.

As a student I am 'paid' to think more than create and document. I consider heavily the fact that I am always trying to come up with answers as work time, I find it very tricky to not think about my work because it is quite enjoyable. I don't think one has to be writing code solidly for 6 hours a day, I imagine most programmers either spend their time debugging or testing ideas and well then there's paper work.
Personally I am trying to increase my working hours and actual working hours. I end up working 8-9 hours but if it weren't for that thinking time included I would not have made any progress on my projects. Pen and paper and walking are often tools ignored but it's very useful to use those as thought producing mechanisms, writing something down has a somewhat different emphasis although maybe this is because I can't read my writing!

As it stands, the survey lumps persons working in the range [8, 10) together. I'd be very curious to know how many of those work more than 8 hours a day on a regular basis.

Heh. My point is, IMHO there's a big difference working 8+ hours a day and almost 10 hours a day (i.e. a 40 vs. 50 hour work week). I was curious how many devs work around 8 hours vs. close to 10 hours on a daily basis.

. . . after putting in four nine-hour days (not counting commuting time) I take a 5 1/2 hour Friday and enjoy a long weekend every weekend.
I'm also only six numbers (on the same ticket) from a very long weekend, indeed.

I have a 35 hour contract and I can put those hours in as I please, although the union yammers if anyone goes over 10 hours regularly. Normally I do between 7 and 10 hours depending on workload and priority, and when there's not much to so I can go home and do the garden or take a long weekend.

Also the answers are probably a bit meaningless without knowing how many days a week they relate to.
I have to go to work 5 days a week, I am supposed to do 37 hours over those 5 days, which for those without calculators if 7 hours 24 minutes a day.
Convention dictates you do 7.5 hours Monday to Thursday and 7 on POETS.
Some days I do a little bit more, some days I do a little bit less.
Very, very rarely do I do a lot more.
Occasionally there is a small task that requires remote work on an evening or weekend.

I get about 8:30am, sometimes earlier.
Can't seem to drag myself out at 5:00pm... so, always seem to leave after that.

I am PRESENT for 8 hours a day.
I certainly don't work for 8 hours.
There is CP time to factor in, plus checking bank accounts, headline, personal phone calls etc.
I work about 5.5 to 6.0 hours per day.

But this is my attempt to keep work and private lives separate. I end up spending more time in the office, 45-50 hour weeks instead of the contractual 40 but I don't take work home with me and don't even check work email outside of work. I'm extremely lucky that my current employer has an official process within the timekeeping system that allows me to compensate 100% of my overtime as extra days off.

Then in essence, you have an 8 hour work day and it should just be regarded as flexi time.
That said, currently I work about 10 hours a day but soon I might be able to do a bit less, though not officially. Thus it is also a for of flexi.

There was a time (not so long ago) that I had multiple projects and worked on them on a daily basis. This meant that every day I was in front of a computer at least 14 hours.
Weekends were not an exception... maybe less time but still a lot for a weekend.
I recently moved abroad and quit all the external stuff.
Life quality improved 500% and the income too
From my experience, if you're working too much (for too long) you need to do something about it, even if you're comfortable with it... Trust me on this
