couple of years ago, we had a good inoffice events like playing cards, chess, small indoor games on every friday(weekend).
but some fellows take its disadvantage, going home early. reason was not interested in events.
some are demands for outdoor events like, picnic/trip on every weekends.
from that onwords, Management come to a decision that there should not be any event on weekends.
and now occasionally we ROCKS 
really, man is good at giving excuses and taking disadvantages

I would probably never attend a weekend event, my weekends are booked solid from now on. Did management think people have no hobbies or interests outside of work. No friends or family they would rather see than the people they spend 50+ hours per week with?

We spend so much time in the office that I don't see the point to promote in-office activities.
We do schedule lessons that are given by a team member on a new subject or something that can or could be useful for the whole team or for the project but no in-office ludic events.
Currently we have a Team-Building event twice a year that is far from the office that promotes interaction between the workers of both offices that are too far appart for regular face-to-face interactions.

It can help a team to cooperate with each other. Makes stronger bounds. Isn't that the basics of employee management?

For team cooperation we do dealy meetings, 5/10 min first thing in the morning while drinking coffe or such to catch up on eachother and share "yesterday's" problems along with today's antevision.
To me a social event is something off-work for socializing without talking about work.
For that its imperative that everyone gets out of the office, at least to the nearest bar and have a drink together.

I agree. Social events are important, but doing it off-site makes more sense than in office. It helps getting a distance from work...
Bringing the cake for birthday and spending few minutes on chatting is ok, but is this a social event?

we also do that here on birthdays but it hardly takes 15 minutes 
Kind of short for "social event"!
I don't know but I spend so much time with the guys at work that when I think of socializing and having fun I usually don't include them on the "event" 
Wife, kid, parents, friends outside work environment are usually the ones I miss and want to be with on my time off work.

I have to agree... I'd rather play with my dog than play warcraft with my colleagues even tho they're great friends. Problem is we spend 8 hours a day in the office. On the other hand my company was pretty liberal so on some occasions when we wouldn't have much work to do so we monkeyed around with video games, talk, drink etc. for an hour or so. That didn't happen in a very long time tho due to "good" corporate decisions making less men do more work so we just want to go home after 8 hrs and forget about the office, which also kills productivity, drive, motivation and you know the rest. As long as these activities are within the standard 8 hour timeframe, its cool.

Yeah... but they "never" are...
Even our Team-Building events that happen twice a year are on Friday noon 'till Saturday late afternoon so it's one weekend screwed in terms of beeing with the familly.
Also, if we have much spear time on working ours we must be careful not to become completly expendable on the next corporate resources evaluation

The only problem with that is that usually many people don't make it to the place for several reasons. Events during work hours can maximize participation among employees.

In-office activities don't necessarily mean spending more time in the office... We play Dark Stories during lunch break. Sometimes it takes much more time than it should... (yesterday it was about 4 hrs, starting from the lunch up to the end of the day)
