Hi,
I've been reading some articles today by various neterati talking-heads, like Tim Andersen's blog, Thurrot's WinSuperSite, and on fora, like MS's SilverLight forum, MSDN/Cloud9, etc., regarding the public demos of Windows 8, and the reactions of some .NET, SilverLight, WPF, developers to an evident lack of mention, in the demos, of the future role of these tools/technologies, particularly SilverLight.
Of course the CP daily e-mail newsletter is always full of timely links.
I've also done some searches on the Lounge for messages containing "Windows 8," or "Win 8," and looked at what's happening on CP currently in the various forums for .NET, FrameWork, Visual Studio, WPF / SilverLight.
Between now and BUILD in September, I believe there's a valid reason for CP to have a specific forum for the discussion of the future of the .NET tools, the transition to Windows 8, the costs/benefits of switching development priorities to HTML 5 / JavaScript.
There are some interesting "wild card" developments going on like a few .NET => HTML 5, CSS, JavaScript translation prototypes, as well the new, or revised, IDE's like WebStorm from JetBrains.
And finally, it would be interesting to see discussion of the MS "initiatives," like Razor, WebMatrix, in the light of Win 8's initial exposure.
It would be very valuable to me to have this discussion in one place, and for the forum to be "highly" moderated, rather than loosely.
... edit ... I'd also like to mention that I think it would be fascinating to see the results of a survey of CP members at this point in time that would perhaps highlight to what extent developers are changing their strategies, or choice of development tools ... end edit ...

Well, we got through Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 without needing a new forum, so it's not clear we really need one. There will always be "What do you think of the new Razor stuff?" kind of posts in the Lounge.
And finally, Mike Dunn will write the definitive article on Windows 8 UI features, and win the monthly competition.

My suggestion is based on the perception that the Win 8 announcements, in contrast to Win 7, has raised fundamental questions about the future of .NET as a whole, SilverLight, WPF, etc., that are quite unique, and immediately relevant to CP users who, qua group, represent an enormous investment in .NET based technologies, languages, etc.
Other factors I believe suggest a uniqueness in this transition are the "hardware dimension:" touch-screen integration; and the issues of deployment-across-many-form-factors, particularly the small device "space," which seems more salient now in the "iPad epoch," than before.
And, I strongly believe that CP, as "hive mind" of the best-and-brightest in the .NET galaxy, represents an invaluable source of information to cut through the hype, the hyperbole, and the downright errors of fact, emerging from the multiple-headed Sauron of Redmond at this time.
Note the current thread in the Lounge started by JGasm, the Lounge messages on: Gamma's working with the Visual Studio Team, transfer of Scott Hanselman to Azure, and on ... and on.
Secondarily, my suggestion is based on my not having the time to wade through the spate of messages on the Lounge ... a most enjoyable past-time ... to winnow out content around the future of .NET. I believe there are many CP members that also do not have time for extensive Lounge-trawling, and would appreciate CP being a "court of first resort" to find timely information ... between now and BUILD when, perhaps, things will be clearer.
Of course, your opinions, or rebuttal testimony, on whether this transition is "another sea-change just like all the previous sea-changes" (active deskop redux ?), or, indeed, a "revolution," would be greatly valued.
I am still fascinated by the fact that in all of this talk about HTML 5 and JavaScript/EcmaScript there is little mention of what I perceive as the "Cinderella maker," jQuery, and its ubiquitous adoption, verily even unto the tents of Sauron of Redmond.
But, I am only making a suggestion to my highly-esteemed technical peers betters, here.

I don't disagree with any of the issues you point out; if there was a Weight forum, I would probably look in.
Doesn't it seem like a lot of this talk is really just rumors right now? Of course, if any of these rumors bear out, that would be another story.
It's good to think about these things in advance.

If I may use your analogy of a "Weight" forum: suppose I found out, as I neared my sixty-eighth birthday (September), that there was a sudden statistical "tipping point:" where being ten-pounds overweight had a strong correlation with mortality via cardio-vascular incident.
And, I futher found out that my current patterns of diet and exercise, evolved over years, may now be inadequte to prevent rapid weight-gain, and there was substantial publicity about, but not clarity within, announcements of new "breakthroughs" in weight-management via diet and exercise.
And, culturally speaking, suddenly it was considered "obscene" to be even slightly overweight, so if I didn't keep my weight down, I would be unemployable.
Under those circumstances I would definitely be looking hard to be critically informed about the current state of the "new ideas" about weight, exercise, and diet: I'd "bite the bullet" now, rather than later, to possibly take-up some new techniques, to learn some new habits.
Yes, there is a lot of rumor and confusion here, as various MS functionaries put out messages that, at times, seem contradictory, and as a vast gaggle of talking-heads blog relentlessly.
And then you have the issue, as Pete O'Hanlon has discussed on his blog[^], of many MVP's being under NDA's, which deprives, possibly, the "hoi polloi" of programmers invested in .NET from what has been an extremely valuable source of direction, guidance, counsel.
My suggestion is based on wanting to easily find within CP a forum where rumors are debated, and estimates are made based on the wisdom, experience, and connections, of CP members.

I'm not sure what you want saying about jQuery. MS has signed up to using it big time, and it forms a core part of their HTML 5 tooling. Saying that, HTML 5 is a web technology so you can substitute a different JavaScript library as necessary.

I'm not sure that I "want" anything vis-a-vis jQuery: I was only, as an aside, registering my personal curiousity based on my current experience that on virtually every website I "look under the hood of" jQuery is in use, and my belief (open to question) that jQuery has transformed the use of Java/ECMA/Script.
When people are talking about the future of programming as being "HTML 5 and JavaScript," it seems strange to me they leave out describing whether they are talking about "old," or "new," JavaScript. Of course, that's no more strange than seeing in national level technical publications articles that refer to "Angry Birds" as the leading "application" on the iPad 
imho the mis-named "JavaScript," litter-runt of Mozilla, prior to jQuery, and other extension libraries, was, and still is, a strange mongrel of a weakly-typed programming language unworthy to stick its nose in the poop of C#
Was jQuery adopted by MS because Ajax was so poorly implemented, or because its widespread adoption was a "fait accompli" ?
In any case, the role of jQuery in the future of programming for Windows, in the context of transition to Win 8, is exactly the kind of discussion I'd like to see on the forum suggested.

I'm not sure about whether or not it was. The important thing to remember though, the AJAX library was aimed purely at AJAX development so there was a large gap as far as MS was concerned and jQuery fills this gap. As it was such a mature product, Microsoft had the win-win of signing up to an OS project showing their "commitment" to OS projects, and getting the work done for them for free.

For this type of discussion the JavaScript[^] forum may be the best, but there is also the Windows API[^] that may be appropriate.
However, you know where I think the best place to ponder a subject so important to developers would be? here[^].

It's been ages since I've been able to visit the Lounge. I get the dreaded "-- Unable to load messages due to high load. Please try again--" message. I can look at latest threads in the Lounge by clicking the links on the main page, but I haven't been able to lurk on the forum itself in awhile (as in a few weeks).

Ah, I just changed Show to Last Day, and it loaded the posts with no problems. Does Show: All mean that I was trying to get back every single post ever made?
As far as I can recall, the only value I remember changing manually is the Layout value. All the others I've left alone.

Yes(ish), in that it allows you to get at every post ever made, but it doesn't load them all and then filter them. I typically set it to show the last 3 months.

I've just discovered Windows PowerShell...all I can say is, wow! It's truly amazing how much stuff it does. I'm only discovering it now because I skipped Vista. I've lately been learning Linux and Posix with the Subsystem for Unix-based Applications that comes with Windows which you get your own *nix running inside your Windows...they depend a lot on 'shells'...Bash shell, C shell, Korn shell etc so I've been messing with shell scripting a bit and learning what they do.
Then I came across PowerShell...you can do anything with it.
There should be a forum on CodeProject for PowerShell

based on viewing CP pages in: IE9 release, Chrome Canary[1] latest build
This really is getting picky, but I would like to observe:
1. on a forum like the Lounge
2. on the top (global site) Search text-entry box that includes a 'magnifying glass' icon at the right margin: this icon is never a functional ui element.
For better and for worse, most folks are socialized to expect any icon to have some function, and I'd wager that many users, as I did until I realized what was going on, will be puzzled why clicking on the icon does nothing, leaves the menu dropped-down, does not initiate the search.
Ideally, imho, both the search function within a forum (as in the Lounge), and site-wide would have identical top-level user interfaces, or be combined into one UI.
If you are going to drop-down a menu presenting a choice of modes, and keep it open on the site-wide search, I'd prefer to have the choice of selecting multiple search targets: i.e., via checkboxes rather than one-only-mode via radio-buttons: it appears to me that functionality is already available on CP.
For me, it would be just as useful to have only one search UI per web page, with no drop-down options, and then, as now, present options for refining the search results, and advanced search, in the results-of-search page.[2]
Or, what I'd like best, would be to make the icon at the right edge of a unified search function UI trigger Advanced Search, substituting a more "mnemonic" icon for the magnifying glass. That way I could do "quick and dirty" searches assuming a default search-target of the current active forum just by typing in some text and hitting enter: and could engage the Advanced Search function as needed by entering my search-text, then clicking the icon.

[1] I note that Chrome (Canary) does not have a magnifying glass icon, or any other icon, next to the address bar to trigger search.
I think that's a damn good thing, since the magnifying glass is an icon used for both changes in view (as in PhotoShop, etc.), and for triggering search. Aside: I think not having a top-level menu entry for 'view' parameters is a design flaw in Chrome/Canary.
[2] Whether there "should be" a graphic UI element of any type to trigger search, whether one can assume that all users today know that you hit return/enter to trigger search ... that's an open question.

That's the reason why I can't use that search box on my Samsung Galaxy Tablet. Neither Opera nor the browser that is already on board display a return key in the on screen keyboard when that search field gets the focus. That's the reason why I think there should be link behind that icon.

So to summarise:
1. Make the hourglass actually do something such as actually trigger a search
2. Remove the dropdown options
1 is something I've been meaning to do forever.
2 is something that I'm not sure I'd like to remove because I like that it shows you, before you click anything, what subset of the content will be included in the search. At one point we had it so that any search returned all results from all content types but this was frustrating when you're viewing an article, search, and find a bunch of forum discussion posts (which can overwhelm the article search results easily)
