Welcome to the world of writing software on contract to the U.S. Federal Government.
I work for a large defense contractor. Often time, software is developed as a proof-of-concept or a prototype for the "real" project, which will come later. Unfortunately, that means a lot of it is never touched again. After five years there, I have a directory with about two dozen programs, most of which were subsequently abandoned.
Your (and my) tax dollars at work, I'm afraid.

After an elongated speech emitted mangled from a new tongue, it has come to my attention that the information presented does not belong above as it is. For those that inspire to conspire for settlements as a certain percentage above also do (as a percentage), it should be noted that the government is quite a similar issue and perhaps should be placed appropriately. Despite the complicated relationship between the government and money which can easily be simplified (although difficult at times), it should be noted that the work they are paying you for is paid by them for doing work that they don't do... at least not here.
I'll leave you with that thought for today.

By my definition, money is compensation. If I don't receive adequate compensation for my work, I go elsewhere. A reward on the other hand, is something extra my employer/customer gives me to express their appreciation for a job well done.
Extra money is nice (hey, I ain't stupid), but seeing the application I sweat blood over being used is really worthwhile. I worked as a defense contractor for several years, and most of the stuff I wrote got used once if at all and then put on a shelf. The applications I write now are used on four continents and in over a dozen countries. I still get compliments on stuff I wrote 7-8 years ago from customers and service people. You may not be able to bank it, but that kind of appreciation sure seems to last a lot longer.

Well, if you are into high-speed ink jet printing equipment (500 feet of paper per minute, about 8 feet per second), you can find my stuff here[^]. I did the user interface and touch screen management. Unfortunately it's not really a desktop application.
One of these days I want to write an article or two for CP. Now where did I put that can-of-time-for-things-I-want-to-do...

Ummm, that shouldn't imply ANYTHING about the QUALITY of my WORK.
I think seeing my client actually use the product is the best. I've usually put more effort into something than I'm actually compensated for (yes, dreaming about the d*mn thing DOES count in my book), and there's nothing like feeling I wasted a year or more of my life when a project gets cancelled or put on the shelf.
And if I do a good job, there's followup work, which means more $$$!
