I prefer to use one big monitor (2560x1440, 27", which is equivalent to 2 "normal" monitors). That way, all data is close together and in one plane, which is easier on the eyes. And it's better for the environment!

I concur, one large monitor per computer; and multiply computers at the ready handling different tasks.

I was commenting about myself (as everybody was invited to do). Traders or people with a lot of security relevant monitoring applications might need more. However, most people just overdo it and having a single monitor with the combined number of pixels of two other monitors is always the better solutions (both for the eyes and the environment). Believe me, I used to have two and was a bit uncertain about the move to one super monitor. It worked out to be one of my best decisions.
Four cores with hyperthreading easily handle all the stuff I need to do (a host and three to four virtual machines all doing different stuff is no problem at all!). Everything (including the monitor) adds up to some 160 Watt on average.

the problem with that is i dont know where to find one(and i dont know if my desk has enough space for another CRT(but im shure i could make some)).
and you reminded me, there is an old one here somewhere that has a green tint to it, no just to find it...

Two portrait and 3:4, 1200x1600 aspect ratio which is becoming more difficult to get hold of these days as the TV style widescreen aspect ratio is taking over monitor sizing.

I agree.
I have 2 widescreen 1080x1650 portrait monitors plus a 1280x1024 monitor plus the laptop screen (1280x800)
The 2 side portrait monitors are great for coding (one for Visual Studio, one for SQL Server Management Studio) then the 1280x1024 displays web pages and the laptop displays mail, chat or anything else. Thus:

I got my team 2 19" LCDs on top of 2 23" Widescreen LCDs.
They are spread across 2-3 machines.
My monitors are:
-Top Left monitor is for email / inter-office messaging
-Top Right - Source Code Control / InstallShield
-Bottom Monitors - coding / obfuscation
We all use a program to use one mouse and keyboard to control all the machines without a KVM. Has really nice clipboard support as well (can copy & paste from one computer to the next... including files).

I used to use MaxiVista software. Now I use USB-to-VGA adaptors (which despite the name can actually run DVI and HDMI) so don't need the second machine any more.

Anyway I feel that too much space leads to some difficulties a well. look around is too messup for me. what you think?

I currently use three (actually don't power up the third until I'm knee deep into something) but have support for up to 6 thanks to my super awesome ATI card. I can only use four monitors at maximum currently, unless I get two more DP monitors or two active DP converter boxes.

At work I have 2 17" monitors at 1280 x 1024.
At home I use my TV 32" 1920 x 1080 and a 19" 1280 x 1024.
I much prefer working with the wide screen resolution for Visual Studio. Yes I know I can move windows onto different monitors. But I prefer having it all on one screen.
Ideally, at the moment, I would like to have 2 22" wide screen monitors and one 19".

I have 2 at each, but 2 24" at home vs 2 19" at work. Yuck.

I got almost the exact same setup at work and home. Once I tasted the flavor of two monitor development at work last year, there was no going back. I had to set up the same at home.
But I have been reading on video boards that offer 3 monitor setup (Plus Kick-Arse gaming experience). Once I read it, it's in my blood-stream, then there's no stopping it. Nothing can stand in the way of an idea whose time has come.

At home, I have an 21.5" iMac and a 37" LCD TV. At work, I have a 15" Lenovo ThinkPad  .
That means: I think my home setup is better...

Work - 4 monitors (laptop screen (1280x800)+ 3 (1080x1650, 1280x1024, 1050x1680)
Home - 2 (laptop 1920x1080 + old 'HD' TV 1368x720 [which can 'fake' 1920x1080, but it doesn't look as good])
