Let's say I have a coding problem, and someone has agreed to look at one or more files for me. It would be real nice if we had a way to share files with named users. Here's how I see it working:
0) We have a file share page that allows the uploader to specify a) the file to be uploaded, and b) up to 5 users that can download it.
1) The upload is made available for just 24 hours. After that time, it's deleted.
2) Anybody named in the downbloading users list gets an email saying the file is available, along with the expiration date/time (when the file will be deleted).
Possible problems:
0) File sizes would have to be kept to a minimum.
1) The number of downloadable files available from a given user at any time should be restricted to 1 or 2.
2) It would be up to the downloading user to scan for viruses.
Other stuff:
0) Possibility that this feature be allowed only for certain reputation level
1) Ability by the downloading user to report abuse of the feature
2) Maybe have a method that allows a downloading user to verify that he wants the file before making the download available to him. If he refuses the file, the sending user gets an appropriate email.
-------------
Of course, it would be a lot easier to just allow someone to attach a file when they email a user, but I can envision all kinds of hell breaking loose if that were to happen.

We have something planned that should help with this (and also be in context)

Great minds think alike.

it isn't just one article, it seems they have been copying lots of stuff for the last two months or so. Just take the given URL, shorten it to its top level and read some of the titles, they'll sound familiar.

Looks like the user cnblogs on that website has been a busy bee. Appears to be the top poster on that site.
|

There is also a user cnblogs[^] on CodeProject, wonder if they are related?
Chris, what does the email address / ipadress etc, suggest?

There are many, many Codeproject articles there.

To add insult to injury - they serve the source files from Code Project so CP servers are still taking a hit here.

OTOH it probably is the only way to keep up with all the revisions those web scraping applications seem to need.
yet another reason for CP to install a web service...

I wonder if that is why there was a step change in the online user count earlier this year? Would need Chris to quantify that with the GA stats, but it seems to be about 10-15K higher on average.

Are you suggesting Chris is now running sock puppet web sites on different continents, and secretly redirecting all traffic to CP?

No - that was due to many, many late nights speeding up hardware and software.

Hey Chris,
Since the rogue site is linking to files on CP's server, wouldn't it be easy to detect the referring URL/domain and redirect them to a blank zip file or perhaps something more interesting like a 4800 x 4800 resolution lossless JPEG of Justin Bieber.

That would only take care of attachments, and not the body of the article. Someone should find out where this loser plagiarizer lives and egg his house. Any takers?
