I've written a simple web app to test the URLs of our various internal applications to ensure none would allow anonymous login access. I thought all was working fine until another developer mentioned that one of the URLs should be accessible to anonymous users.
We use Active directory logins/passwords and membership in order to provide/restrict access to certain pages and applications.
When set to default credentials, I get no errors.
When I set my network credentials to some made-up user, I get 401 errors, as expected for all URLs. For the URL in question that's accessible to internal anonymous (i.e. not logged-into-this-particular-app) users, I get the "401 access denied" message as well.
Here are the main parts of the code:

This is all contained within a try-catch-finally block. With default credentials, I fall through into the "do work" section of the code.
With the network credentials I set above, I get the "401" exception, which I would NOT expect for this particular URL since it's supposed to allow anonymous user access.
So my question is: why am I getting the 401 message for this page?

Have you checked if IIS is configured not to allow anonymous access?

It does allow it if you come in from a web browser like internet explorer.
This is within a company network so no one from outside can access the site, of course.
The issue is you can log out of or into this particular internal site. When you log out of it you can still access this one page.
When I try this using ASP.NET (HttpWebRequest) I get the error.
Perhaps someone can answer this question: By setting my own "NetworkCredential" am I being looked at like I'm trying to access the internal page as though I'm an external user?

Here's a brief update after poking around a bit. I notice I get different behavior when I set "NetworkCredential" to my valid username and password then when I use "CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials".
When I use "NetworkCredential", I can now access the URLs that allow "anonymous" access. But I now geet "401" errors with all other URLs.
In short:
a. Using "CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials" gives me access to all URLs
b. Using "NetworkCredential" (with correct username and password) gives me access to URLs allowing "anonymous" access.
Question: why do these behave differntly?

Currently I have a modalpopup control that contains a gridview control. In the gridview i have a templatefield column that contains a link button control that, when pressed, runs a jquery impromptu function so I can ask the user if they are sure they want to perform the function. On yes, the javascript function calls a web method that updates the database and displays a message that it is successful.
That is the easy part, but now I am stuck trying to get the gridview to rebind and then reopen the modalpopup. I have been trying to use javascript to get the gridview to rebind to the datasource, but $.find('<%=Gridview.ClientID %>'); keeps returning a null value. Anybody got any ideas?

I guess you could use callbacks for this. After the web service call, does the data associated to the grid change? If not you need not even do a post-back and cause the popup to close. You could have the GridView inside an UpdatePanel with appropriate <asp:trigger>. If the links are part of the GridView, you could use OnClientClick event of the links to call the web service without post-backs.
If you want to cause a post-back for some reason, I believe you could use the BehaviorID of the modal popup extender to show in on pageLoad()

Hi.
Im building a web application in win xp using iis5 and visual studio 2008.
i've created a custom handler(with no extension) in the following manner :
1. created a class that implements IHttpHandler.
2. registerd it in web.config in the httphandlers section like follows :
<\add verb="*" path="/GetData" type="WebSiteLogic.GetDataHandler"/>.
Now, when i run the app using Visual Studio server and works fine.
But when i deploy it to use with my local iis server or choose in VS to use my iis local server it wont recognize the handler.
Can somebody point me out what im missing?

With IIS 5, you need to tell it to use this handler - it won't pick this up from the web.config file. It's been so long I can't remeber how exactly, but go to admin tools and open the IIS managemetn console, and poke around in there for your applciation's properties. I vaguely remember a "Settings.." button in the "General" (or "Home"?) tab that brought up the dialog where you set this sort of thing, but as as I say...

I have a multiline textbox on my webpage. I make a stored procedure call to save the textbox value to a database. If I enter in for example "test'ing" with single quote, the app errors. How to handle this? Is there an escape sequence for this?

You need to escape such strings, so replace ' with ''. That is 'test'ing' becomes 'test''ing'.

I download Ajax toolkit. next,create a tob in VS2008 toolbax called Ajax toolkit. then I add this file AjaxControlToolkit.dll
the problem is after adding the dll I can't see anything regarding Ajax Control.
does anyone know what the problem could be?

Where did you add the ddl ?
Right Click on Toolbox > Choose Items... > Then select the dll !

Ajax doesn't improve the performance of database.
If you understand Ajax properly, you yourself will be in a position to decide whether to use it in your
scenario or not.
For simple CMS project, where contents are static and just for display purpose, I would suggest not to use Ajax.
Different people have different thoughts.
