On the top left of the screen it says (as I am typing) 7,251,134 members and growing. But I conducted a small "test" which baffled me and hence this post.
For about a minute, once in about 5 seconds, I refreshed the home page and I found the following numbers.
* 7,252,168
* 7,252,778
* 7,252,168
* 7,252,778
* 7,251,134
* 7,251,890
* 7,252,778
* 7,251,134
* 7,252,168
* 7,251,890
* 7,252,168
What does that mean? Members online can understandably grow and shrink but members count itself fluctuates !

It is a Cache problem.
The number online changes too.
Each time you refresh you get a new server, and they are not all in synch.

I would doubt the first three digits more than the last four.

The mirrored servers are not synced in real time, so you'll always see a discrepancy depending on what server you hit.

True, however 7M accounts in 10 years, that's an average of 1.2 per minute. So maybe it would be better to sync the number every minute, or to broadcast new accounts right away. I don't see a DOS attack anytime soon here.

I know this would probably be quite complex to do, but...
Would it be possible to remove or disable the "Add an Answer" button from questions if you are the OP?
Frequently, the OP posts a question, someone posts an answer, and the OP posts another answer along the lines of "No, you have misread, I need this instead...". Since it is another answer the original answerer is not notified and so does not improve his response.
Removing the "Add an Answer" button would force them to use the "Add Comment" widget instead.

Yep we do have a couple tasks to help alleviate this common problem. But we don't want to hide the Add Answer button altogether. There are some legitimate cases of its use by the OP.
Specifically we were planning to take the OP to the edit page of the question with a special notice at the top. From there they can choose to:
1. Do as we suggest and improve the question
2. Go back to the question view page and add a comment
3. Acknowledge that a new answer is actually want is intended and go ahead with it
Another feature we're planning is the ability to demote answers to comments.

The only legit use I can think of is to post a solution the OP has found - which rarely happens with the programming forums, so I'm not holding my breath! Still lets see how the revised version works!

Actually, that's been my experience two or three times. In one instance, it took a couple months of working with MS to get an answer. I figured that that answer needed to be well noted, so I posted the answer to my own question.

Right. I think this is actually a common occurrence. We do often find the solution to our programming problems. The question is whether the OP chooses to update his/her question.

While on the face-value, this is great feature, but I see troubles ahead too. Who decided it is a comment not an answer? What if I provide what I think is legitimate answer, but another person thinks it is more of a comment and then s/he demotes it. May be it should work similar to "vote to remove message" feature, but with much weaker weight. Say, instead of single person's interpretation, the algorithm takes into account the person's RP and applies some weight, when the threshold reaches certain value, poof, time to demote man!

I just clicked on "Ask a Question" in the QA section, and was presented with the edit window, Subject, Tags and Content. Unfortunately the section that starts: "A few simple rules when posting your question." was not visible so I saw no guidance on the rules for posting. Maybe if the rules appeared first, and the questioner had at least to scroll past them before getting to the edit box, then at least some of them may read the guidelines in advance of their post.

Some people will ignore everything, nevertheless good instructions are bound to be more effective than bad ones or none at all (I don't even see them on my laptop without scrolling).

My point was that since they don't appear on the first screen we can hardly criticise people for not following them. If the instructions are the first thing they see then all those that ignore them could be referred to your goodself for chastisement.

I am really glad to see a regular expression forum - they are complex enough that I think it is well justified.
Just a few thoughts:
1) It isn't listed in the Programming Discussions list under the "Q&A" menu - perhaps it should?
2) No "How to get an Answer" message like we do with the C#, VB, etc.
3) It would be really helpfully if we directed people to somewhere like www.ultrapico.com[^] with the suggestion they download Expresso because it could educate them on regexes and probably fix half the problems before they get raised. It's free! (Yes, I know there are others, but that's the one I use, ok?)

Since it appeared, the responsiveness has reduced and slowed, and there has been a loss of functionality (the ctrl [arrow key] no longer works).
I thought there may be an issue with one machine, but it affects two others as well.
Whatever you have done is unpleasant and should be reversed.

Which CodeProject are you using? I see no yellow bar, response is fine, and the up down keys work just fine.

I just logged on as normal.
There is a yellow bar pinned to the top of the messages.
Is says "Hint: For improved responsiveness use Internet Explorer 4, Firefox or above. Ensure Javascript is enabled and choose 'Normal' from the Layout dropdown and hit 'Update'."
