The target machine is smaller, slower and older, so it is important to test every release on the machine itself. In between I have an old laptop in my cupboard to test it before I check it in. Too much of our time is spent integrating, because we are a lot of developers, in three different firms, and some people don't seem to understand the principles of version control. The project leader likes to change the configuration without telling anyone, just to keep us from getting complacent.

An important technology, in short an emulated PC.
E.g. you can run a virtual Windows XP on a Vista-System, even in another language (not fo forget Linux and other operating systems), so you can test if your Software runs there.
Google after "Virtual PC", "Virtual Server" and "Hyper-V" (MS-products) or "VMWare", to name the biggest players.

Or wait for the SP1 hotfixes.
I still can not believe all the bugs I found in the first day that need to be hotfixed when running VS2008 on a 64 bit i7 machine under windows 7 two months ago.
1. The search crashed visual studio 100% of the time - had to install SP1
2. The debugger crashed visual studio again 100% of the time - had to install a hotfix
3. Docking windows crashed visual studio at random - had to install a different hotfix and a few more

I'm starting a new project on beta framework and I'm planning to release a project after framework is released (For example, 1 year of development - 6 months for framework to finish).

I never installed pre-release software other than google chrome and gtalk... (google softwares stays at beta for lifetime  )
so I thought of voting for that option.

Funny as it may sound, my office laptop is the least painful option - if something goes wrong I can restore it to the original state very quickly, and the data is generaly kept on SharePoint anyway.
For non-work related stuff (Linux, Scheme), I mostly use VirtualBox on my home machine.

I never test a new framework on pet projects... you can never appreciate (or not), a technology if you don't use it on a real life program.
The one where your designer want this link orange instead of blue...
The one where the client want this to be asynchronous...
The one where you have thousands of little requests like that... never happen in my pet projects since I'm mainly the only one to use them.
