Cool, thanks for this. I'll swat up on it tonight.

The reason I'm asking is I have been invited for a second interview at a place that currently has and needs to support this set up until a replacement can be sorted (which will be one of my main tasks if I get the job).

They currently have about 150 users on this. They have already upgraded the data storage to SQL, but are not quite ready with an updated front end.

Wish me luck...

I have not actually used Access for a number of years but certainly, we would create a front end containing forms and reports and a separate mdb containing all of the tables or links to SQL server (ahem; it was along time ago).

You could then place the front end on a client machine with the back end on a server and connect the users. Not ideal but it worked reasonably well.

It was a simple and quick way of getting an application out to a small set of users but I wouldn't do that now. Either a web or winforms front end looking at a sql server database (or whatever your preferred technologies are).

Thanks for that. It's for a company that has this in place already, but will be building a new, improved system. Unfortunatly, this system will need maintaining until the new is ready.
It's for a second interview I have, so the new system and the maintainence of the old system would be my responsibility if I get it.

I have this block of code in the code behind of a VB.NET web site:

If (row.HasVersion(version)) Then retVal += String.Format( _
"Version: {0} Value: {1} <br />", _
version, row(columnName, version))

Else
retVal += String.Format( _
"Version: {0} does not exist.<br />", version)
End If

Visual studio keeps reporting that 'Else' must be preceded by a matching 'If' or 'Else If' and

'End If' must be preceded by a matching 'If', but THEY DO all match!

Statements are separated by an NewLine in Visual Basic. Put an enter before the "then" keyword, and it should work Smile | :)

My degree course is all Java.......i am forever getting VB and Java syntax mixed up! And we have to use NetBeans and i am so used to Visual Studio.

I'm not sure where you get that idea. In VB a line in the form:

If condition Then statement

is a self-contained, single statement If that does not have a matching End If

I have not heard that this will change in VB2010. What I have heard is that in some cases, you will not need an _ to extend a statement to a second line, but this is kind of the reverse issue.

I screwed up. I was talking about the "_" character. I've always hated it.

And, if using properly formatted code, it'll be eliminated in most cases it's used now. Hell, after playing with the Beta's and RC, it's gone in about 99% of my use cases.

Its difficult to see the formatting you have used (stick the code in a pre block).

There should be nothing immediately after the Then on the same line. Move the retVal += onto a new line.

The VB way to write hex numbers is to use the prefix "&H".

consider this example:

Dim hexNumber As String
Dim hexValue As Integer

hexNumber = "&H10"
hexValue = Microsoft.VisualBasic.Conversion.Int(hexNumber)
MessageBox.Show(hexValue)

You just need to use the Convert class. i.e txtResult.Text = Convert.ToDecimal("0x10", 16). The firat parameter is your Hex figure as a string, and the second parameter is the base to whch you want to convert from(can only be 2,8,10,16). Convert also has different functions to convert to int16, int32, short, long etc. Just type Convert. and intellisense will give you all the options.

My apologies, Convert only converts from one base to another as an integer i.e. the ToInt16, ToInt32 or ToByte Functions have the fromBase Overload. Blush | :O

Each digit, counting from right to left, is a multiple of 16 to the power of that digit's position. So counting digits of the number 0x1234 as position 3210 for example we have

1 * 16^3 + 2 * 16^2 + 3 * 16^1 + 4 * 16^0 or
1 * 4096 + 2 * 256 + 3 * 16 + 4 * 1 etc

and your value 0x10 = 1 * 16^1 + 0 * 16^0 = 1 * 16 + 0 = 16

If you remove the "0x" from the front of your string you can then use Int32 to parse it to an integer:

Dim str1 = "0x10"
Dim str2 = str1.Substring(2)
Dim i = Int32.Parse(str2, Globalization.NumberStyles.AllowHexSpecifier)
MsgBox("i = " & i)

Shows i = 16.

Hi,
So I have a column of cells that are the combination of a other cells in the row and a result of a few "if functions." The value comes out exactly as planned however in order for the data to be sent to the DDE server I need to press F2, go the beginning of the cell to insert an "=" sign and then press enter. I would like a macro to do what I just mentioned and then go down to the cell in the column. I used to write code using C++, but I'm a little rusty and unfamiliar with VB. Below is the formula and then the result of the cell. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Turn on macro recording, perform the actions, turn off macro recording and Robert is your father's brother.

Use Ctrl+Left/Right to switch messages, Ctrl+Up/Down to switch threads, Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right to switch pages.
