There are quite some developing countries who are still living in that history. The world isn't upgrading as a whole, and it'll take a while before everyone saved enough money to buy Windows 7 and a new dual-core.
We're talking developing countries, where the companies aren't interested in the support that Microsoft isn't giving on VB6. Think computers that run Windows 98 without automatic updates. You don't want to install .NET on such a machine

I have a friend here in UK who only upgraded from Windows 98 last year, and only then because he wanted to go to broadband.

In that case, they should use C++, surely ? VB6 was NEVER a good option.

To answer; that depends on my role vs. them 
I'd go for Delphi off course, and would recommend them a UI around the "cash-drawer-opening-interface" in Microsoft Access. Cheaper, easier to modify, and not much real chance of breaking important code.
Since that would need be compiled separately. Nicely decoupled from the UI, just as best practices prescribe.
But in their case? Well, VB6 is available, and there might not be that many C++ developers available o'er there.

Dot matrix printers still have a big share in ticket printer market.
About vb6, I agree, it is totally deprecated. For serial communications you need an OCX component, while .net has it in the Base Class Library.

Thanks for all of your comments. Only one has given a helpful word. Anyway I like to explain you. I am not a professional software developer. But I was a VB developer 10 years ago. Now it is too late to learn a new language. Because now I am in a differant field. and also I am in a developing country. These days I am developing a small software and I am using a cash drawer. But the problem is it has no serial interface. It has a cable with a RJ11 connector.

Which fact you did not mention in your first post.
So what protocol does it use to communicate with its host? You have also not given any clue as to what software interface is available with this machine. For example what character sequence do you need to send to the cash drawer to make it open?

Thanks, I have created the setup project. But one thing I am missing, i think. I am using sql server 2005 express edition as .mdf database file. My client machine doesnt have sql installed. Do I need to install separately or there is any option while creating setup project to include sql server files?
Can You/someone help me on this?

sorry if i misplace the post. i dont know where to post this crystal report issue but anyway i create this in vb2005.
here's my problem. how to load a multiple report in crystal report? what i did is i add crystalreportviewer in a form and i call the rpt file which is smoothly working but i add another crystalreportviewer let say i have 3. so i make also 3 forms and 3 rpt. when click button all 3 report should load but it takes 7-8 minutes. very very slow.

If your reports are taking 7-8 mins to load, it's more likely to do with your query/stored procedure that is selecting the data... how many pages long are your reports? Are you loading a full set of data then using Crystal to filter records? This will be monumentally slow if you are...

1 page per report but there are 2 - 3 subreports on every report and different has tables.
Report1 → subreport1 →table1
--------→ subreport2 →table2

no, i just create a working table then load on that report. i did not use storedprocedures.

I am trying to create a dictionary in Visual Basic 2008.
I have a list of words in a text file and need to get the definitions for them.
I am trying to make a program which reads the text file, line by line, taking out the words.
Then I want it to go to "http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/" and download the definition only, without adds, menus, etc.
Then I need it to save the definition, line by line, into another text file and repeat the process for each word.
So far I have got the opening and saving part sorted but I have no idea how to isolate the definition and download it.
I have googled it but couldn't find anything helpful.
All and any assistance is appreciated.

You'll first need to download the page[^]. Then you'll end up with a HTML-page in a string, or a file. Then you start stripping everything that you don't want. That could be done via regular expressions, or the string-handling routines from .NET.

Hi Everyone,
Here is an interesting problem. I am trying to add an expression column to a dataset that already contains data. The expression involves coverting the string data in a specific column into numeric data.
The MS help system says I should use the following example to perform this operation: myDataColumn.Expression="Convert(total, 'System.Int32')"
In having incorporated this into my code, I get the following error:
"Input string was not in a correct format."
Here is the actual code:
Dim tmpCol As New DataColumn<br />
tmpCol.DataType = System.Type.GetType("System.Single")<br />
tmpCol.AllowDBNull = False<br />
tmpCol.Caption = "nResult"<br />
tmpCol.ColumnName = "nResult"<br />
tmpCol.DefaultValue = 0.0<br />
tmpCol.Expression = "Convert(Item01, 'System.Single')"<br />

tmpDS.Tables(0).Columns.Add(tmpCol)
I have tried several different ways of using the Convert function, but nothing I've tried works.
Has anyone else had experiences with using the Convert function that might help???

Additional Info:
1. The column, Item01, in the tmpDS dataset is a varchar field that contains only numeric data.
2. The tmpDS dataset is obtained from an XML data file.

OK, so the two possibilities are that your filter is wrong, or your input includes values that will not convert to a single. Have you checked the input ?

Yes. I've checked the xml file and all of the values in question are either numeric or null.
I've tried using the 'System.Int32' conversion definition as well and received the same error; thinking that perhaps the 'System.Single' might be incorrect.
I'm wondering if there isn't some issue with adding the new column to an existing dataset already containing data.

I'm having consistent crashes when accessing the solution property screens (application, compile, debug, etc tabs).
So if I open solution, and I double click My Project (which opens up the config screen), VS just immediately dumps out. If I reboot, the solution(s) start acting normal again. Just annoying.
Has anyone else run into this? Any idea what causes it? Once the crashing starts when double clicking "My Project", a reboot has to be done to prevent the crashing. At times, that can be a pain in the ......

I've had that happen once or twice. I solved it by navigating to the project folder in Explorer, enabling the "Show hidden files", finding and deleteing the myProject.suo file. Launch Visual Studio and open your project.
