when you select an object into a DC, you must de-select it before you destroy the DC or the object. you do this by selecting the default object back into the DC:

CBrush brush;
brush.CreateSolidBrush(...);

CBrush *pOldBrush = dc.SelectObject(&brush);
...
dc.SelectObject(pOldBrush);
// now dc and brush can go out of scope, without leaking GDI resources
