Hi all,
I have built an application that stores file and does other kinds of work too. I store the attribute of files i.e file name, upload date, byUser,Time in the database and the actual file is store under a folder i have specified. So what's the best way to achieve this?
Q1. What's the best way to store files? Should everything be kept inside the SQL database?
Q2. Should I just store the file attribute inside the database and actual file in the specified system folder?
I have been situation where somehow the file got deleted and doesn't reside in the specified folder but it's attributes are in the database. So I were to view all the files I were to see the file but the acutal file is not. So how can i Synchronize it?
My application were suppose to keep thousands and thousand of file. Can somebody please help me what's the advanates/disadvanges and provide me a link or resource for the architeral desing.
Thanks

It sounds like you have a good handle on the pros and cons here. You can store the files in an IMAGE-datatype column, or keep the files in the OS and the properties in the database. If you have large files, you might prefer to keep them in the OS for performance reasons.
You could always have an application that runs daily (executed in Task Scheduler maybe) that scans the database for any records of files that no longer exist and delete them... or have a stored procedure in the database that performs the same task and run on a scheduled basis.

In VS 2008,every website is ajaxenabled.. so there is no template as such.
Start developing the website you will be able to use ajax and ajaxcontrols

In Visual Studio 2005, There is no Preinstalled AJAX Toolkit. You have to installed AJax Framework and Toolkit also.
As VS 2008 is advanced version than VS 2005, all are inbuilt.
Hope this will help you

As Visual Studio 2008 is the latest version, and Now a days ajax is used in more n more websites.. thats y Microsoft provided preinstalled ajaxtoolkit framework with vs2008 and evry website and every website ajax enabled but VS2005 it was provided as an additional plugin..

../PresentationLayer/Images/ where r several images now i want to get all file names from this folder . how can i get names?

|
|
|
|

It would be as below

string[] allFiles = System.IO.Directory.GetFiles(path, string.Empty, System.IO.SearchOption.AllDirectories);

thanks........Is it possible in javascript?
|
|
|
|
|
No, JavaScript doesn't support file operations. Secondly JavaScript resides on client and this is something that needs server side processing as the code I provided will be used in ASP.NET(C#)

No its not possible using JAVAScript. I guess your files is in the server. Then you need to write the server side code for this.
If the file are in client, JAVAScript does not have the sufficient permission to read the client system file. If you really need it you can go with ActiveX, but it will only on IE.

what you are looking for?Whether you have to read all the files of a folder from server machine or client machine?
if on client machine, you cant read from javascript.Javascript doesn't have that much access rights to read system folders at client system
Cheers!!
