There is, in fact, a version of IE for Unix.

Hi Chris,
I've posted some question to the message boards, but it is a visual appearance question, i'm unable to explain it in words...
It will be easy for me if i attach any kind of image that depicts my thoughts so the Gurus can help me (us) better. Is it possible to upload a image and attach to the message.....
ThanX,

I'm using IE 5.5 on Win2K Pro
From the Code Project home page, I click on something in the side bar. When that link appears there's another side bar that hides about 1-2 inches of the left side of the screen. That makes the left-most inch or so of text unreadable.
Is there a way to disable that bouncing side bar ?

I've disabled it. What browser were you using?

Hi,
I'm a beginner with computers, and I have to make a Database.
1- I have Microsoft Access. Is that a good software to use?
2- I like to know if anyone knows any good book that would teach Microsoft Access to a beginner like me.
I appriciate all the help.

I tried answering the survey. However since I haven't attended any of the events mentioned (not even other events not listed), I can't submit my answer.
How about a 'None' option for the event list ?
Just my two cents.

Hi Chris,
It seems that people are having problems with posting code at forums. Especially, the trangle brackets are often missing.
Maybe the asp for programming forums you should use Server.HTMLEncode for output? The database table would get new BIT column and HTML form would have new checkbox "Use plain text" (checked by default). The asp output code checks the new column, and if it contains TRUE, uses Server.HTMLEncode. Otherwise, it just spits the untouched contents.
Beginners would leave the option in its default state - their posts would be HTMLEncoded. Advanced users would be still able to use HTML formatting after clearing the option.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how difficult is integrating the smileys with this.

That's exactly what will be done. I need to lock down features while I rewrite things using C# - otherwise I'll have a VBScript and a C# version to keep in sync and their ain' that many hours in the day!

Chris,
A minor problem that I came across with my bookmark links (the CP bookmark feature and not the browser ones) is that when articles get moved my bookmark links become invalid!
For example I had a bookmark link to..
http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/cpropertyview.asp
and it now moved (infact today) to..
http://www.codeproject.com/docview/cpropertyview.asp
Is there a way of automatically updating bookmark links as well? Or is this happening on the server while I am typing this and the link will become valid after a few hours?
PS Great work..

I need to know if I want to report a MS Access bug to Microsoft, how to go about it?

Just a hopefully simple one. When viewing a page of comments that may contain 5,10 or 25 comments, I would like to be able to view 'ALL' comments for a thread as they may wrap from 'page' to 'page'. Would it be possible to mark a comment and say, 'Make this comment the one at the top of the page' and in this manner I would be able to possibly view all comments for a thread at one time.
Thanks.
Chris

There is a 'View Thread' link in each comment that will do approximately this.

This line contains angle brackets: <this is="" text="" inside="" angle="" brackets.="">
Did you see the angle brackets? Testing.
I posted templated code on your forums and the angle brackets and the stuff inside was gone, so they thought I had bad code.

any text between angle brackets is assumed to be HTML tags.
use < and > to show the brackets in your posts.

G'day Chris,
[I'd already posted this message to the Lounge before I realized that this is a more appropriate place. Sorry ]
I was reading an article on CP last night and wanted to read all of the follow up comments. This meant hitting your server about 30 times to load the content of each message.
Would it be possible or feasible to have an option to display the content of all messages at the end of an article rather than displaying each message one at a time?
I don't know how many other CP visitors do this, but if there's a code article that I'm interested in, I nearly always read all of the comments at the end of the article and this means heaps of individual pages for your server to generate. This single humongous page idea might mean a large hit on your server for the single page, but reduce the total outbound traffic for the server compared to multiple page hits.
Of course, if this is already available and I just didn't see it, please tell me to RTFM and I'll go away and give myself a clip around the ear.

Hi Chris,
This is just a suggestion (as ridiculous as it may sound, or not). I could be wrong, but it seems like CP slows down when people hit all the forum (based) pages. Articles load up pretty quick most of the times but at times even those are slow to load up.
How about seperating all the forums onto a different site altogether? Something like forums.codeproject.com or discuss.codeproject.com, so this way articles are seperated from the forums? And only comment links from the articles go to the other site (preferably on a different machine).
Just an idea...
PS Keep up the great work!

Yep - it's definitely the forums that are the slow point. Uwe did an excellent job of getting the to where they are today but the unexpected visitor load took us a little by surprise, so they are being rewritten.
Having the forums on another server won't really help. The forums account for probably 90% of the load, so what we are doing is moving to an SQLServer cluster while reworking the algorithms that do the threading. It's a bit of a balancing act between keeping the site cruising along while moving to .NET while at the same time ensuring we keep the current systems up to the demand.
cheers,
Chris Maunder
