It's stable, it's fast, my OpenGL applications work nicely, I always found what I need in the control panel.... Well, it may not be the best OS ever, but IMHO it's the best ever from MS.
Vista: slow, resource demanding, OpenGL have (small) problems, lot of efforts put into UI craps not on actual performances and features.... I always end up frustrated when searching through the control panel for something so well hidden because it's "dangerous" for non expert users...
Windows7....? Someone sais that it's Vista with XP performances..... I understand a company (MS) has to release new products to keep its incomes, but I really doubt there's a real need for such a new OS.

I have a Mac too, but I prefer linux, and as a bonus Ubuntu is free.
When I need to run Vista or XP I use VirtualBox.

I installed Ubuntu and it was great for a few weeks the nkep getting slower and slower.
Eventualy ten seconds to open a text file mde me go back to XP 
Oh, plus updates broke lots of stuff.

Am awaiting for Windows 7. But it should have all backward compatibility unlike vista.

Backward compatibility from XP and beneath. If it just claims a backward compatibility to its immediate predecessor ("Vista"), it is just ending to be another hopeless crap.

TBH, when they announced full compatibility with Vista I thought they'd actually manage to do that. Truth is Google Chrome crashes for me, and so do my mouse drivers (well, the latter ones do not crash, but they do not detect my mouse either). Though I seriously hope these issues are fixed soon(tm) by MS or the vendors.

We can't keep using a 10 year old OS. Microsoft is moving along and we'll have to as well willingly or not to follow. Plus, we'll be moving to 64bit so ...
That being said, Windows 7 actually is pretty good. I installed the beta on a virtual machine and it looks pretty good, it ran as fast as XP runs on a VM.

Why put your trust in an operating system with no staying power? That becomes unsupported just as it's becoming stable?
Oh, I keep forgetting, Windows is only a GUI running atop DOS.

Windows 7 should actually run faster in a VM than Windows XP, cause it's "enlightened". IE, kernel code has been adjusted to know when it's running in a VM and doing crazy stuff to improve performance under that condition.

Agree ... as a developer .. i always have a box on next generation ... just to learn .. whats up .. new APIs .. etc. Once in production; i have one in dual boot mode. But, for the none dev folks .... yes ..wait.

I wonder how it will perform on a single processor?
I tried to install Vista Business version into my Pentium 4 2.5GHz system and boy, the computer runs real ssllllloooowww...
Had to revert back to XP and runs fine.
I know my dual-core processor on my laptop will do just fine.
I just love the Vista's options for the file management... better than XP. For example, when you move files into a folder which has files with same name, Vista would ask you whether to replace, rename the file, do nothing, or skip... I love that! On the top of that, i like the way it renames the file (rather than seeing "Copy of...." and "Copy of Copy of..." and so forth.

Windows 7 is essentially designed as a successor to Windows XP UMPC, so for slow-ish NetBook systems. A lot of work has gone into it to increase peformance.
So expect really good performance on your single core CPU. It should be faster than XP.

Teracopy even puts Vista's file copy abilities to shame. I even use it on my Vista systems. I highly recommend it!

I tried to install Vista to my P4, it was so slow I could stand only 2 days.
Windows 7 is working very well. As most people say it's not faster than XP but it's comparable. I can't say if XP was faster or not. Difference is minimal.
