I don't agree that SD works on assumptions. Its okay to have a few assumptions in you requirement, but an assumpted requirement will led you no where.

Hi all,
I'm developing a Windows application in C#. It generates reports using ReportViewer. These reports should be printed on a dot matrix printer. However, there is a problem.
The application runs on multiple computers connected in a local network, the printer is connected to the network also. The following happens:
1 PC prints without problems
1 PC prints the document and then hangs
2 PCs crash when dot matrix printer is selected and Print is pressed
However, all PCs print on a laser printer and all PCs print on the dot matrix printer when using another application. My code is in a try-catch block but no exception is caught. Any help will be appreciated!

I USED THE DEFAULT DIALOGS BUT IT DOES NOT FULFILL MY REQUIREMENTS

Can anybody tell me the best way for sending bulk data between client and server.
I have an application running on sockets. I have to add a functionality in which the server will send a huge amount of data and that data will be stored on client's local machine in a database or in some files.
I cant go to remoting option as the client can be implemented other than .net like java or something else.
Any suggestion will be appreciated.

You should use binary format to transport data. And if that data is too long you must pass it in chunks.

I wish to have a way in which i just have a dataset that i get on server by querying the database and without doing any conversion into bytes or binary, send the whole dataset to client and client catch this dataset and insert all the rows in its local database.
The number of rows can be more than 50k.
Apart from this functionality the client server communication is done in the way that server converts the message string into bytesarray and send through socket. This way is expensive for large data i think thats y i m searching for an alternative.
Do u think that just converting the large data into binary (like converting in a bytesarray) is a gud solution ???

What form of serialization are you using?
You need to serialize the data as efficiently as possible.
Have you looked into some form of lossless compression?

Finally we have decided a different medium. We have a web server where the request is recieved it fetches the data from the database and downloaded by the client using HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse classes. It has increased the performance alot.

Anyone know of a good Lint-like tool for Managed C++ code? Is it possible to get Lint or Splint to recognize and work with managed code? I've looked at some of the tools listed here[^], but they all just seem to give a bunch of metrics reports. I've used FxCop a little bit, and it gives me more of what I'm looking for (actually pointing me to potential errors in my code). However, I've read that it actually analysis the MSIL rather than the original source. Does this matter at all, considering the different features of some languages (such as you can't call Dispose() in C++, you have to call ~class_name, but you can call Dispose() in C#)?

Yes, FxCop will analyze the already compiled binaries. You may want to check out a tool called StyleCop[^]. In my opinion, it's still in some very early stages of development but I think it will get you a lot of what you're looking for.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, all my development so far has been in Mangaged C++, not C#, and currently StyleCop only supports C#. Otherwise, it's probably just what I'm looking for. Do you know if they intend to add support for the other .NET languages? If so, this could become a really powerful tool.

Ah...sorry...didn't realize you were looking for a C++ tool. I don't know if there are plans to extend StyleCop to support other languages. Now that it is a publicly available tool, the community might be able to convince them to add such support.

You should ask this in the ASP.NET forum rather than here. However, what you need to do is set your authentication to Forms in the web.config file and set the login page here.

I am developing an application in which users have facility to download a form (a word file), modify it and upload it again.I have never done it before so I just want to know how to make users downloading that file if i will give a link to that file something like (|~/downloads/admission_form.doc) just like ordinary navigation url will the user be able to download it or it will just open in another window? what is the procedure to download files in word format?Can anyone has an idea about it?Please help.Thanks..
