In addition to the other reply, look through the Edit Controls under the Masked section
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/edit/#Edit%20Controls%20-%20Masked%20and%20Validating%20controls[^]
for example code.

You are not the first person with this problem by *miles*. There are good CEdit dropins there with all sorts of nice features, like tooltips, text in grey when your box is empty, etc...
