Self taught or by the book: Who generally is a better programmer?   [Edit]

Survey period: 31 Mar 2008 to 7 Apr 2008

A self-taught programmer may say they have more insight by solving problems the hard way, while a formally trained dev may counter that there's the hard way and there's the correct way. What's your call?

You're talking about the way I learned programming (with Visual Basic 6.0 ... i know ... no comment, but after 2 years I had enough of the Visual Basic confusion and switched to c++ Laugh | ). But back to your message: Maybe you use the formal techniques, but you are more encouraged to develope your own ideas and you create your own algorithms that you usually don't forget, thus often you can adapt them to other problems. Formaly taught programmers often have to develope algorithms rootedly under pressure of time. I think this leads to not so perfect algorithms Wink | ;-)

You often cannot figure out what computers do... But don't forget that they only do what they were told to do Wink | ;-)
