AFAIK, you need to sign up in order to download files from articles.
Donno about you, but if the first exposure to this site was a link from Google to an article where i wanted the code, and upon clicking it i was required to fill in a big form full of details... i would probably leave and not return unless i was completely unable to find what i needed elsewhere.
I'm guessing the quick sign-up is a compromise for these users.

I don't recall exactly how/when/why I joined CP, so I tried your suggestion.
A downloader-in-a-hurry is supposed to provide three answers: name, password
and e-mail, that seems easy enough. And apparently the name is optional,
which is what I regret.
If CP wants to keep the name optional, I would suggest they turn the quick
account it into a temporary account, something that will insist on becoming
a real account or stops working after 2 weeks.
If we keep it the way it is, pretty soon the forums will be flooded by
numeric members...

I don't remember the reason for the sign-in requirement, so i don't know whether that'd work. But, it might be enough to just allow entering the name at that point.

Your signature's looking really messed up in FF2.x
The 'citizen...' text is ~1/3rd cur off by the sig seperator, and the green text is overlapping it.
Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop.

Chris - if you hit reply to this message, you'll get an Error on line 951. It seems that my name might be causing a bit of an issue - you are using parameterised queries aren't you?
Now, one choice would be to get all the people on the planet with apostrophe's in their name to change them - or the reply could be fixed. This isn't some St Paddy's day hangover is it?

Three symptoms.
1. Yesterday I replied someone in this "Bugs and Suggestions" forum. The message was successfully posted. I saw it there! And then I refresh IE. It's gone, forever!
2. In "VC++ MFC" forum today, I typed a lengthy message as my reply to someone this afternoon. I clicked [Post Message] button. CP was quite slow during that time. Then I got the error message: "The message has been posted" or something the like. Which means it should have been posted. So I clicked the link of VC++ forum to abort that editing page. The fact is, my message was not posted.
3. Again in "VC++ MFC" forum today, sometimes after having typed some lengthy messages and clicked [Post Message] button, I got the error message as "There is problem inserting your message". But actually the post which I was going to reply was still there! So it's not the problem related with deleted posts.

Your posts are still there, at least your reply to my post about Last Visit not working. I had to expand the Date Filter to Last Week from Last Day to see it.

I stand corrected. I had the Date Filter set to Last Day and couldn't see your post, changed it to Last Week and there it was. I posted my original reply at that time. I changed the Date Filter back to Last Day and went to the Lounge. Came back here with the Last Day setting still on and, Lo and Behold! your post is still there and it wasn't there before. Something strange is sure happening.

If you select a forum and have the Date Filter set to Last Day, and no changed messages are present, then you get the following message:
-- No messages --
Try changing the 'Messages Since' filter
This message should now read:
-- No messages --
Try changing the 'Date' filter

I can change the date filter from any setting to another, except for Last Visit. Whenever I select this and select Set Options, It resets (or just forgets) the Last Visit and leaves the selection on the last selected date filter.

Thank you, Chris. One problem though, if you have selected "Last Visit" and find the new posts, if you try to view the entire thread to see the new post in context, it will probably be the only post visible in the thread. If you change the Date Filter to Last Week or Last Month to expand the date range, the entire forum is reset and you have to find the thread all over again. Shouldn't View Thread sort of ignore the Date Filter? Or possibly, shouldn't the changed Date Filter only apply to the current view which is a single thread?
