There is no efficient and fool-proof way to protect the content once it lands on to the Internet highway. Perhaps you can obfuscate the content, use SWF or ActiveX to obscure the data from prying eyes making it difficult and harder for them reading.

I'm receiving this error when trying to open a popup page from a custom control.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about, because I have no idea what you're referring to. Could be the ASP.NET AJAX library, could just be vanilla user controls, could be something else.
