i think every time you and Gagan asked question without making any self attempt. If the things are really tough then you should ask but you should not asked this question directly in the forums.
Atleast try to put some efforts while doing work. you should now how to use google as it very important. Again you should have MSDN on line link.
this is only suugestion as asking the question on Forum without efforts/learnings will not help you to become a good developer

This is why every reply I give him includes the phrase 'buy a book'. He seems to have no interest at all in actually putting any effort in. I am curious to know if he has a job somewhere ( if someone hired him ), or if we are in essence doing work that he gets of rentacoder or something.

The problem is, Sonia, that you have bombarded this site with questions that you could have found the answer to with very little effort. Some of the questions could have been answered with google, and others just by you running a piece of code. All you have managed to do is alienate people so that they won't feel the need to reply.
Yes - people on this site are knowledgable, but this knowledge comes through experience and trying things out for themselves. It doesn't come from somebody else doing our thinking or work for us.
BTW - if you think we couldn't get our knowledge from books, where do you think we got it from? I know that I gained experience from books, trying things and researching topics on the web. If I don't understand something, I find as many reference sources as I can, read them, try a few things out, and question/think about things until I understand them. Try it - only by learning how to learn new things will you improve.

But not fired this event.

Adding an item to the control doesn't affect the selected index. There is no reason for the event to fire in the circumstances you describe.

Perhaps u forget two things
1.To Write the below line with in if clause having page ispostback conditon.
dropdownlist1.items.insert(0,new listitem("Add New","0")
and
2. set the Autopostback property of dropdownlist to True.

Because by default this item is selected i.e first item in Drop down is always selected

See that event will fire only when selected Index changed as it is in name. And by default first item is selected so it will not fire untill you select another item
