DOS, no, Win32 Console, Yes.
There is nothing preventing you from usig MAPI or equivelent APIs in a console based win32 app. But there is no command per sa.

Hi,
I have an old computer which does not have a CD ROM installed.
Since I also have some old devices like an old CD ROM separetely, it was quite obvious an idea to build them together.
I found in the base plate all cable connections of the same size and pins number as seen on other computers (for mains supply and data) so I could succesfully connect the driver to the computer. I also installed the software device driver from floppy disk.
Now the problem is that the new device is still not recognized by the device manager of Windows. The only positive sign is that the eject button on the device properly works (so mains supply is surely OK).
Did I miss something? Should I have changed some options in the setup?
I would appreciate any answer.

I'm not sure if this would help, but it is worth checking the CD-ROM jumpers at the back, to see if they are set.

Which version of Windows ?
If it is 95 etc. you shouldn't need a driver
|

Yeh Win95 is installed. Even if I may not need a driver it still does not work.

I would check that I have the IDE cable plugged into the motherboard and the back of the CD drive correctly. The side of the cable with the coloured line on it should be next to pin 1.
Next I would check to see that the BIOS can see the drive. Make sure that the IDE 1 Master/Slave is enabled (which ever you have the drive setup as).
If all of this is correct then Windows should see the drive no problems and load all required software drivers automatically.

I've got a problem running Terminal Server 4.0 running with Win9x clients ( Win95 & Win98 ). Basically Windows keeps forgetting the num lock key is activated and keeps switching modes but the light stays on/off.

Hi all,
I have a pentium 2, 233 MHz, SDRAM 64 with win 95.
Now I wonder if it is possible to install win 2000 on this machine, if yes what is the procedure to achive this goal or what I have to think before I start the work.
Any help or pointer to site which describe this process.

Although according to Microsoft 64 MB with 133 MHz is the min. sys. req. it still would run very very slow.
I mean I have Petium II 400 MHz / 310 MB Ram and still is not very fast. Probably adding another 64 MB would make things better.

I currently have a Pentium Pro 180MHz running Win2K. It does have a slight advantage with 96MB of RAM, but I don't think you'll have any problem installing on your machine. Although I much prefer using my new server for my daily work, the old Ppro machine did quite nicely for a long time - I'm just spoiled by the speed of the new one now
If you're certain that the rest of your hardware is compatible, go for it. On mine, I fired up the installation program, answered a couple of questions, then went to bed. In the morning it was fully installed and working, despite being only the Beta 3 release.

Roger, this guy has only 64 Megs of RAM !
Probably it's going to end up with all sorts of error messages due to lack of memory.

I understand that, but I only had 96MB, an even slower CPU, and much older equipment. It's worth the risk, to my thinking. If it fails, he can always add RAM.

Hi all,
At home I want to connect atleast two to three PC's to test DCOM objects.
Right now I have a PC with winXP and other win95.
The computer with winXP is connected with 100Mbits internet connection.
Now my question is what hardware and software do I need so that I can build my own LAN.
Further I have network cards on both computers.
I would appreciate if someone can help me in this regards.

Assuming the network card in the Win95 PC is 10BASET or 100 BASET, you will need a network hub and one network cable for each PC. The networking software is already available as part of the operating systems for both but may need to be installed. Set them up with a common workgroup, or, if your XP system is a domain controller, you can set the Win95 PC up as a domain user.
Those are the basic requirements. Sounds like you have much of what you need already. Good luck.

Well, if you are going to use Peer to Peer network, that you don't even need to have a hub/switch.
All you need to do is create a workgroup, and add both PC's to it.
Another thing would be is to decide on what IP address to use. In my network I use private static IP's 10.x.x.x (and they should have same SubNet mask), but this won't work if you are going to connect to the internet!
In case of using DHCP, things get a bit more complicated, due to DHCP configuration.

Well, if you are going to use Peer to Peer network, that you don't even need to have a hub/switch.
With no switch you need a crossover cable to switch the TX and RX signals to the appropriate pins. Also, you need a switch as soon as you want to add a third PC.

True, third PC requires to have a HUB/Switch unless you have a PC with two interfaces, and some packet forwarding software.
Making cross-over cable is not really hard.

Hi,
Was just trying out a small sample code which allocates certain amount of memory(say 80 MB).Now the Task Manager shows certain amount of memory(xxxx). I generate 400000 random numbers and free of the memory in those locaitons. the random number funda is used to have a defragmented deallocation. Even after freeing almost half(40 MB) of memory the Task manager dosent seem to show the reduction. I guess, this is because of the defragmented deallocation which was done.Any suggetions or comments???

This is probably in the workings of the (MSVC I presume) CRT memory manager. Have a look at the malloc/free (and its implementation functions) sources and you'll see likely causes. Basically, it doesn't give up memory to the OS right away.
Disclaimer: This depends on the OS and version of the MS CRT! MSVC6+ using NT5+ uses the plain HeapAlloc API's where older versions do not, and IIRC it's only for allocations above/below a certain threshold.

When istart myWindows 98-based computer, you receive the following error message:

If ithen click Details , isee the following information:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at memory address
I tried going to Command Prompt only and typing :
c:\ren explorer.exe explorer.old
as given in the support.microsoft.com. But i am getting the File not found error.
