in is a variable of type "pointer to FILE "
FILE is defined in stdio.h

this is not a function (but probably that you didn't provide full informations).
FILE is a structure defined in the CRT, used for files operations.
FILE* is a pointer to a FILE.
mainly, when you have to use files, you first open it (with fopen() for instance). such a function returns a FILE*. then, you may want to read, write, move inside and close your file freshly opened. all the function that perform such an action get a FILE* parameter...

Do you have some sort of ActiveX control in mind, or perhaps you want to embed an Excel graph in the dialog?

i wanna plot x-y data in a graph, tht is being written by my vc++ pgm to a text file. those text file data has to be read and plot into the graph,and it has to be displayed at run time.....

It'd be crude, but you could experiment with LineTo() (which can draw one-pixel dots) and related functions.

If you are looking for a graph that need to be drawn by yourself, then go for a custom control. It can simply be developed from CStatic.

One way to do it without many difficulties is to walk around.
You can get without difficulties the mouse messages/events in the dialog box. And you have a parameter CPoint point that gives you where the click was made or the pointer is.
then...
Just take the coordinates of the bounding square of your picture and ask if you are inside of it. I mean:
CRect rectPict;
rectPict.top = YourPicture.top;
rectPict.bottom = YourPicture.bottom;
rectPict.left = YourPicture.left;
rectPict.right = YourPicture.right;
if (rectPict.PtInRect (point))
{
}
else
{
}
Hope it helps
Greetings.

Which contrasts with your initial "when I let mouse over the PictureBox only" comment. Make up your mind before asking for help.

Derive a class from the picture box using the ClassWizard. Then you can manage the messages.

One of the founder of C/C++ wrote some really good books: Bjarne Stroustrup.
He really deserves to be read.
Also O'Reilly has undstanding books in every way.

Dr. Stroustrup had nothing to do with C. Furthermore, he was not "one of the founders" of the language; he was the designer and original implementor of it.

From where do you start?
Do you know programming but need to learn syntax and idioms of C++?
What language did you do before?
Are you just starting with programming as a whole?
