Graphics editors, Text editors (including color coded), Algebraic equation graphics plotters, Simple programming languages, Text processors (different from editors), Complete user interface software (DOS days), Data entry formatting, Modem/TAPI/Serial/INTP, and the list goes on. Basically all the stuff that needs to be without which the average IT programmer would not be able to do their job and then some.
Oh, and code that reads/writes and interprets databases, so that the users (programmers) do not have to do it for them self’s.
Sorry, I got carried away. Some one I met resonantly said programmers where a dime a dozen – but he did not understand.

I work on an app which gets all of its data from an XML feed. I'm sure that feed must be generated from data in a database at some point, but that detail is so far removed from what I do that it might as well come from anywhere.

How can i serialize and generate an xml file of the derived class in c# that consists the 5 properties in that 3 are datasets and 2 are class objects.
and i am using c#.net 2005 and sqlserver 2005

Hello sir.
You will want to use the 2 properties of the .NET#c IDE to de-serIalize the 5 class objects in the Sqlserver 2005 datasets. 3 of these datasets will have 3 more properties running in the RLC running time.

mySQL seems to be the dummys one-size-fits-all "I think I just need such a database thingy" type stuff.
That everyone uses it seems its biggest argument.
Failure is not an option - it's built right in.

We are going to use postgresql after some investigation, and postgresql seem to fit our needs perfectly

That was what I meant. We use Postgret here too.
Firebird seems to be an anlternative, but one of the Guys here has extensive PostgresQL experience.
Failure is not an option - it's built right in.

SQLite is a good choice over Access, or maybe Firebird if you want more flexibility.

I do
Embedded Firebird turned out to be a good solution to my company's needs. I developped an application that people install on notebooks and use it on remote locations to acquire data and do some calculations and reportings, using Firebird embedded database. Later, those notebooks are connected to their company's network and data is transferred to main SQLServer database for further processing.

Ah yes, but that is not always possible in the case of customers. Some people are content with stuff that works, over total reinstallation of their software, just because the totally uninteresting piece of technology that drives their app, has changed.

Brainwash the customers, provide a new installer with conversion script. This should get them over the SQL more easily.
I had a customer once who insisted on using Access as the backend. This way he could change the data if the application did something wrong. I had a spontanious urge to hit him on the head when I heard his plans.
