I'm not sure if you can create a reference to a COM dll in your code behind in .NET 2.0, or if you need to call it from your middle tier.
But, in essence, you create a reference to a COM dll, and then .NET generates a class which you create instances of, it handles all the COM stuff for you.

Add a reference of that dll in ur project. import it in ur page by using the Imports(VB) or Using (c#)
and use it.

If u think u can, u can.
If u think u can't, u r right.

Hi Sreeram,
You are right Sreeram actually what .net will do is it will create a wrapper dll for your COM dll with the name "Interop.(YourCOMdllName).dll " and places this in your bin folder of your application.By that way you can acces all the methods which are there in COM dll.

I'm just starting out with ASP.net, making a web parts intranet.
I'm triyng to get some basic web parts (ascx files) working on a page,
I want them to share a variable, 'StaffID' which one part generates by
looking up the windows login name of the person viewing the page, and
then queries the database to find out the StaffID associated with that
name.
That part then shares it with all the other parts, using a class
called "IMessage", I have set up static connections for each
individual part,
The main part, Jobs_Main.ascx has this code:
<br />
Public ReadOnly Property Message() As String _<br />
Implements IMessage.Message<br />
Get<br />
Return StaffID<br />
End Get<br />
End Property<br />
<br />
<ConnectionProvider("Message", AllowsMultipleConnections:=True)> _<br />
Public Function GetMessage() As IMessage<br />
Return Me<br />
End Function<br />
to assign the StaffID (which is generated on Page_Load - I also tried
Page_Init and this made no difference)
and then the other parts use
<br />
Public _message As IMessage<br />
<br />
<ConnectionConsumer("Message")> _<br />
Sub SetMessage(ByVal message As IMessage)<br />
Me._message = message<br />
End Sub<br />
<br />
in the scripts and then:<br />
If (Not (_message) Is Nothing) Then<br />
StaffID = "" & _message.Message & ""<br />
Else<br />
StaffID = 1<br />
End If<br />
That all works beautifully. If I change the staffID manually on
Jobs_main(in the code) all the others update next refresh. However I
have put in a catalog, and when I close a web part (the part I was
trying was FavouriteLinks.ascx) then add it again, it defaults to the
StaffID of 1...
So I assume it is not getting the _message value, or it thinks the
_message value is 0 for some reason? Does anyone know why this would
be? Could it be that it is loading before the jobs_main web part? If
so how do I make it load afterwards?

Hello,
I have created and tested a web service .Net 2.0
I have created a client that client (PDA smart device CF 2.0) that will consume the web service. I have added a web reference using visual studio and everything works fine.
However, the customer wants the PDA to be able to update the web reference. This is because the web server that the web service has been deployed on could be moved and deployed on another web server. Moreover, the web service could be modified and the PDA will need to update the web reference to get the most up to date changes that have been made.
Can anyone point me in the right direction in doing this. Some code would be most grateful,
Thanks very much,
Steve

There is no answer to your problem. I think you can't update the webreference dynamically. don't break published interfaces. It forces clients to be recompiled and makes people grumpy. Check This[^]

Hi,
In my stylesheet I have the following line of code:
background-image: url(../../Images/logo.jpg);
Why can't the following not work because logically it looks the same??
background-image: url(/Images/logo.jpg);

They are not the same

No. Two levels.

Not at all. It starts from the root.

It will work if your web site has it's own domain name, but not if it's in a virtual directory.
Example 1:
site at: www.mysite.com/
css file: www.mysite.com/css/std/style.css
image: www.mysite.com/Images/logo.jpg
Either way of adressing the image works.
Example 2:
site at: www.myhotel.com/mysite/
css file: www.myhotel.com/mysite/css/std/style.css
image: www.myhotel.com/mysite/Images/logo.jpg
Your first code will access the image, while your second code will try to access the image at www.myhotel.com/Images/logo.jpg.

Thanks for the reply.
I am testing locally on my home pc. My images directory is at:
http://localhost/MySite/Images/
And my stylesheets are here:
http://localhost/MySite/Includes/Stylesheets/
Cheers
ma se

Yes, then you have a virtual directory named MySite. The url "/Images/image.jpg" will look for the image at the address "http://localhost/Images/image.jpg", not "http://localhost/MySite/Images/image.jpg".

To make it work in localmachine I suggest don't use any virtual directories. Copy all files to IIS root folder and try.
