I play games occassionally such as Age of Empires 3, The Sims 2, or Sim City 4 and with all of them randomly the game will minimize itself. The lazy man's approach to this is to disconnect from the internet and startup with no non-essentials. The only things I have running for sure are Norton Internet Security, Webroot SpySweeper, Lexmark printer stuff, and all the regulars that HP ships on the computer. Does anybody have an idea of a regular offender here?

Anything that auto-updates, displays ads in a "free for private use"-version, or pops up tooltips / messageboxes.
To me, this happens as soon as AntiVir updates, which pops up a progress-bar. This will interrupt games such as Half-Life2, etc.
Also, one spyware (cannot remember the name, sorry) seems to be displaying ads in random intervals, in a new window, for just a few seconds. That might be shorter than it takes for your computer to switch tasks, which could be the reason for you not seeing it.

Norton Antivirus minimizes my games to tell me it updated successfully.

I've had avast popups appear over my game before. I had to tab out to get rid of it.

CleaKO The sad part about this instance is that none of the users ever said anything [about the problem].
Pete O`Hanlon Doesn't that just tell you everything you need to know about users?

Check the game designer's support website for any known issues with the game. You may have an old graphics card that's not compatible.
--EDIT--
Have you done any tweaking to the game (i.e. modifying system files)?
Trinity: Neo... nobody has ever done this before.
Neo: That's why it's going to work.

Some driver issue perhaps. Any messages in eventlog?

I have a problem that points at mshtml.dll. IE 7 gives an error message and requests to send it to Micro... . The message points at mshtml.dll as does the error log. A bit of delving comes up with iexplore and mshtml.dll having a problem with incrementing and decrementing when external.window is involved.
After requesting and installing the hotfix (Jan 2007), the problem still occurs. Hotfix changed iexplore not mshtml.dll
Does anybody know any more on this? Such as how to fix it?
Wonder if it is due to the change in instanciation tracking.
Thanks.

Hi
I want to save clipboard content with any format it may have and load it back again in.
I'd be glad if someone could help me with this.

Check out a clipboard viewer app, like ClipSpy[^], to see how to read and save the data on the clipboard

I messed up the file association for XML fles, I need help getting it working again.
I've done everything I know how, I've even deleted the messed up one and tried to recreate it again to match an unaffected one. (So pressing Restore won't do it.)
Both the affected computer and this one are XP Pro (SP2) with MS Office 2003, VS 2005, and IE7.
At this point I made the association on the affected computer match the settings on this one as best I can.
On both systems, if I right-click an XML file and select Edit, I get Notepad (as expected).
But... on the affected computer double-clicking or right-clicking and selecting Open doesn't work properly...
In the association I copied, both Open and Edit are set to use MSOXMLED and pass the appropriate verb, and then MSOXMLED calls either Notepad or IE. What seems to be happening with Open is that MSOXMLED passes the file to IE, but then IE passes it back to MSOXMLED, and an endless loop ensues (until I press Cancel anyway).

Have you tried going to control panel, FOLDER, then going to file associations?

Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling MSXML might help?
If that does not work:
I've had something similar happen to me a few weeks ago.
It only started working again after I had found and removed every single key related to the file extension. Try looking for the Type Name (e.g. "CP Test Extension"), the extension with the leading dot (".cpt"), and the extension without the dot ("CPT") and remove every entry that relates to the file type / file extension. Also, I had to remove all entries for the software tool handling the extension (our own app) from the registry. Only then did reinstalling the software and choosing "open with" work as intended when activating "always use...".
Cheers,
Sebastian

At this point I have exported the .xml registry entry from an unaffected system and imported on the affected one. Things are working better now, and I'll look for more info on the problem that still exists.

P.S. I've now imported the registry entry from a similar system and it's working fine.
