I am fixing a computer for someone and I have the following problem:
I can format a hard drive plugged into the slave IDE port from within Windows itself, but when I try to ghost an image onto the drive plugged in exactly the same way, it fails. Also, if I try to install Windows on the drive, it gets to the end of the format then tells me the disk cannot be used.
I have had this same thing happen with two different drives, both failing the same way.
Could the motherboard be bad? Any other ideas?

Sounds like the CDROM is bad. Replace the CDROM and the IDE cable connecting it and see if it gets better. If not it might be a motherboard but I'd only be convinced of that after doing the above on the HDD itself.

Thanks, but I am not using the CDROM, for the imaging, I am ghosting from one hard disk to another, and using the floppy to boot into ghost.
The only time I use the CD is for the XP install.

Can you move the drive you want to image to a different machine and try the same thing?

Yeah, that was the next thing I was going to try - installing both drives in another machine and doing the imaging from there.
You know, the thing that sucks about this whole thing is that because hard disks are so big now, it takes forever to do anything with the disks.

I always start with a 20 gig partition and then use Acronis or some other tool to expand the partition when I'm done.

I've done that too with Partition Commander. This particular drive has about 50 gig of stuff on it, so ghosting it would be best - copy it and expand it into the new one. But, like I said before, I haven't been able to get it to work with the two drives I have tried.
I guess if it would work in another machine, I should at least replace the IDE cable since I have a couple of spares.

Hi, my organization just purchase TWIST USB-GRPS to use with the SIM phone and access to internet. But after driver and phone application installation into a testing computer, this device could not detect the GPRS service of the company phone in my country.
When I create a GPRS connection in the testing computer, the application allow me to choose a list of GRPS service but they didn't list the name of the company in my country.
Now we just purchase SAMBA 55 Falcom[^] and it work very well. It could connect internet using GPRS connection with the phone company in my country. I try to find a knowledge base of this TWIST product but i couldn't found it.
If anyone has an experience with this product please give me an advice or solution.

That would depend on the MP3 player in question, it's manufacturer, and if an SDK even exists for it, which I highly doubt.

I am developing an application in VC++ to write data to a pen drive without the help of driver.
Still now i could find the attached device and Iam able to get the device information.Now i had the handle to the device.
Can any help me how to proceed further.
I kept this question in many forums, but i could not get answer.
Reply is like we cant do without driver.
But the driver is going to do every thing with the device handle only.
I want to send data packets( copy folders) to the pendrive.
Could any one suggest me.

Asking the question repeatedly won't change the answer. You need a driver! The line I quoted is where you seem to be missing some understanding. The driver, because it is a driver, has access to a whole lot more than just a handle to the device. It uses all that other stuff that the OS exposes to the driver (and only to a driver) to touch the hardware. User mode programs cannot directly access hardware. Period.

Hey
I have a SAPI application that works great locally. Input via the microphone and output using TTS all work great sitting in front of the PC.
What I'd like to do is operate this application remotely, via a walkie-talkie. Do any of you know if a device exists that could plug into my sound card and receive transmissions and pipe the audio into the mike jack, and take speaker output and transmit it via RF to the walkie-talkie?
I don't even know what that sort of device would be called, so I can't search for it.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Nice idea but it as a large flaw. How is the remote machine going to "Push to Talk"? WT's normally can only receive or transmit at any one time, not both at the same time.
I'm sure you'll find some hardware to do it using a full duplex WT, but there remains the issue of having the machine "Push to talk". Or do you want it to transmit continuously, even if the machine has nothing to "say"?

I didn't think walkie-talkies could be full duplex since the mike is so close to the speaker (I imagine a headset type device could be), but I don't really care whether it transmits continuously, as long as it can listen at the same time (full duplex, like you say).
Any idea what that hardware would be called? I'd even settle for a one-way conversation. A device that converted radio to audio and piped it into the mike jack of the sound card.

Yeah, by custom hardware. You're most assuredly not going to plug a WT's linein and lineout to a sound card and get away with this. This would be some kind of hardware that would interface with the radio and then plug into the PC somehow. I'd be willing to bet you'd find something like this around the HAM Radio crowd, or possibly even the manufacturer of the radios.

Actually, you could always use "Lego Mindstorms" or a similar kit to rig something up that physically presses the talk-button on your radio whenever the computer raises a flag.
Actually, a Servo might just do the trick.

plzz help me tru this....
i m not able to ping 4.2.2.2 successfully---- 2 success / 2 loss---always
i m able to surf all other web pages however getting the problem only in ebay.com
i m confused---tried to powercycle , configured browser , tcp/ip tack clearing -- all done still no go.....it could not be issue with server as i can open the web sites from my neighbours computer.........is it comp issue or ISP or some setting..

There might be an adaptive firewall, e.g. the first two pings are considered "harmless" and are replied to, the next two are considered an "attack" and silently dropped. Thats one explanation for the ping failure, but it is just a guess. ebay.com could also be blocked by your ISP/company.

actually this is my home pc so there is no external security..eg server or router...and plz let me know what is this adptive firewall..is it normal or some thing special...i have been using my comp with same setup since more than one year... on one of the forum i read that it could be issue with ISP subnet setting...could it be ?
