I need to start a console application without showing the console. Can anyone help???
The reason I want to do this is that I have a windows application that I want to be able to either run as a straight application but also from the command prompt. I want to have a switch "/?" that displays on the console, help for the command prompt syntax. To do this you have set up the windows project output type to the console. BUT I want to then be able to run the window straight from windows without showing this console at startup.
In essence, I have a console application that displays a form. I need to be able to run it from windows without bringing up a console window.

If you use the Process and ProcessStart class you can redirect the stdin, stdout, and stderr as well as not show a windows. See the MSDN help, I think it has your specific example.

Thanks, but that example is only when the main object of an application is a windows form. I need to hide the console window rather than the form.

You have a confusion in the nature of the beast. A console app runs without a GUI. In theory a console can be run without the windows GUI so there could never be a console window to hide. While there are probably a lot of handy tricks to make the console window hide from a console app and then display a windows app something is not right.
However, Windows apps do accept command line parameters. In fact a windows app can even write to the stdin, stdout, and stderr and never spawn a window. Which would be close in functionality.

Ok, so i started out with a windows application. I wanted to use the switch myapp.exe /? that would display syntax on the console window for the switches on the app. To write to the console you should surely be able to write Console.Writeline("some text")? No, you can't it doesn't work unless the solution's output type is set to console application. If you do this and then run the program from windows rather than the commmand prompt it displays a console window, which I want to be able to hide.

Change the startup mode for the shortcut to run minimized, or get the window handle and minimize the console window programmatically.

Hi, I'm fairly new to the programming world, could you give me some more details of how to do that? I'm not sure how to get the window handle of the console window. Also, I want to hide it rather than minimise so it doesn't have anything on the taskbar.

I always create a windows form, but modify the program.cs file. Comment out the Application.Run line and call your class from there (also comment out the InitializeComponent();) Make sure you call System.Diagnostics.Process.GetCurrentProcess().Kill(); in Main, when you're done.
Maybe not the prettiest thing to do, I don't know, it was the first I thing I found quickly when I needed it, AND it works.

A form is a class so you can deal with it by not having application.run and then just using showdialog or something. A console window appears regardless.

For example if the user click a button in the application 1, I want to pass an string from this application(application1) to the another application(application2), also the application2 has to run simultaneously.

Use the windows messaging queue. You can pass messages between apps and even create your own queue. There is a chapter on it in the Wrox C# 2005 Professional Edition.

I don't think that you can do so. IF you were in one application you can pass between a form and another.
i advice you to save the data you want to use in the other application in a file or a database and then recover it using the second application

There are all sorts of ways of passing data between applications. MSMQ is one example already discussed in this thread. Named pipes, network connections (you can connect through the loopback adapter) and so on.

hi i have a small question / is it posible that i have an own webserver in my c# application?
windows xp home pcs dont have iis on board / this is the reason why want to implement an own server on an specified tcp port. how is that posible.

You could use something free like Apache. I don't know how easy it is to host ASP.NET applications on it, however, I've heard that it can be done.

Why? Your original request was to find a replacement for IIS as it isn't included in Windows Home edition. There are very few applications where you would want to embed a webserver - mostly those revolve around things like router and other network configuration tools. The main use of a web server is to run on a server box. If your intention is to run the application on the same machine as that running the server then you would be better off building a WinForms application.
