Hi all,
IN IIS, XP Server, i want to run two sites with different ports, let say one with 80, and one with 81, but i want them available to public users, now my problem is that user can only view one site on default port '80', other cannot be browsed from any where, I have domain for one site, but not for other site, please if some one can help, then do that,thanks in advance.

Since your other app is running on a seperate port, the user has to type that into the URL to get at it.

thanks, for repely, but it did not work.if there are any special setting please let me know, as i wrote above, i dont have domain name for one site, if u r not getting me let me know i will try to type in better english.

You don't need a seperate domain for the other site. All you need is the IP address, or a URL that resolves to that IP address, and the port number that the site is listening on. Since you're running both sites on the same box, they should both work with the same URL, except for specifying the port number number. If it still doesn't work, then your second site either isn't running or it's not listening on the port you think it is.

Anyone have any tips/suggestions? We currently are running MSVC6 code on several servers and will be migrating to .Net 2.0 shortly.
The powers that be have decided the everything should be set up as a virtual server under VMWare. I'm not convinced yet, that production should be on VMWare. It seems like it would be harder to scale up. Or are the days of load-balancing and "server farms" over?

Well, a friend of mine is running 14 different servers on 1 physical box (Dual Proc/Dual Cores) with 12GB of RAM in a major credit union with no problems. Various people have been doing this for a few years now. I think it's more than ready for prime time.

Almost a month ago I performed a "Vista Ultimate Upgrade (RTM build)" install onto one of my XP Pro (SP2) computers;
The startup time is quick; faster then XP.. but the time it takes to log in is terrible; takes 10 times longer then XP under the same user account.
Once your past the logon sequence, the machine and app speed is zippy.. but the login time and switch user time is killing me!
PC Specs Are up to snuf.. I think the Vista Score is a 3.6
- AMD AthlonXP 2400+
- 2GB PC2100 RAM (2x1 Gig Sticks)
- 40GB PATA Boot Drive C:
- 200GB SATA-I Data drive D:
- ATI Radeon X1300 PCI w/256MB RAM
Would a "Clean Install" result in better login times?

Hello,
On my Domain Controller. how to I look to see my Forward DNS? It seems that the internet is slow and perhaps the lookup is in need of attention. Also, should the primary DNS or the secondary DNS be used as the this? Does this matter?

In the DNS Management console, right click on the name of the server. Select Properties and click the Forwarders tab. This shows a list of DNS servers that your server will use for resolving names it doesn't cache locally.

Hi all!
I have a queistion. I would like to run an application every time that my windows (XP) is shutting down. Is it possible to register a batch script that executes every shutdown in the registry?

No, it's not. Once the Shutdown begins, the loader will not start new executables. You can launch stuff in the LogOff part of the shutdown, where the user is logged off before the Windows shutdown process begins, but not after.

ok, that sounds fair.. Can you guide me how to do that? Is it possible to run .Net applications during LogOff? The .Net runtime is active even during user logoff?

Admittedly this is a poor way of doing things, but now I am curious as to why it doesn't work:
Each PC in the network is setup to get DNS info only from the Server. The Server is setup to forward DNS requests to the Router. The Router is the network gateway and is NOT setup to forward DNS requests.

If I run 'nslookup' on the PC for anyname.com it does not resolve the IP address. If I use IE and enter www.anyname.com in the address bar, it takes a little longer than usual then displays the web page.
How is it resolving the address for the website?

The only way that can happen is if the browser is sending a resolution request directly to a well known public DNS server and getting a reply.

Does IE do this? If so, is there a setting I can change to make it stop? Also, is there a way to turn off caching on the Server DNS?
Since the Server has a forwarder, do the root hints come into play?

The most likely candidate for this would be to go into Tool/Internet Options/Advanced tab, find and turn off "Search from the Address bar". If that doesn't work, I have no idea.

Just about every DNS server I've seen has this option. But exactly how to do it depends entirely on the DNS server you're using. Consulting a guy named "Manual" should tell you how to do it pretty easily.

Was posting my other message around the time you replied, I guess.
According to Manual, if you turn off recursive lookups on MS DNS server it still caches search results but isn't supposed to use them (I guess 'disable cache' didn't sound technical enough for MS). It also said that setting a forwarder for the DNS server offloads ALL zone requests for which the server is not the authority. The server is not forward only though, since it must still resolve the local domain.
The Search from Address Bar is a likely candidate, though how the URL winds up in the DNS server cache would still be a mystery. I also found that many people recommend disabling DNS client caching on the PC, though it is on by default.

I've been searching the Internet for over an hour now without success. I think I found a better way to configure DNS records though, so the search was worthwhile.
The PC should not be able to resolve any URL that is unknown to the Server, but it does. The URL appears in the Server DNS cache afterwards, so I am guessing the Server is responsible.
Should I remove all root hints from the Server? When I looked at the root hints only a thru m were listed, but all URLs are being resolved. Why would the Server resolve a DNS request from IE, but not resolve a request from 'nslookup'?

Hi,
I want to migrate my Win 2000 dial-up networking connections to Win XP. I have about 25 connections, and need to replicate these on a number of PC's.
The nearest I came to a solution so far was a search on Google today, and I found a suggestion advising that I create a copy of the source Win 2000 registry section HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Remote Access, and put this section into the destination PC registry. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked as I still can't see any of these connections.
If I manually add a connection to see where it stores itself, it doesn't seem to appear anywhere in the registry.

hi,
all dial-up-settings are stored in the file "rasphone.pbk"
search for it, and copy it in the same folder at the destination machines.
normaly it is stored under:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk
you can open it with "editor" oder "wordpad"
don't modify it !!!!

Hello All,
I was wondering how to add the tabs to the Active Directory and Users so I can see the last log-on time for the user, etc. I thought there was a command you could use so you have all the additional user tabs.

In the Windows 2003 resource kit you will find acctinfo.dll. Copy it to your system32 dir and register (regsvr32) it. This will add the Additional Info tab. I would also recommend that you copy lockoutstatus.exe to the system32 dir as you can then determine the domain controllers that are involved in a lockout of a user.
