The 1896 Olympic marathon distance of 24.8 miles was based on the distance run, according to famous Greek legend, in which the Greek foot-soldier Pheidippides was sent from the plains of Marathon to Athens with the news of the astounding victory over a superior Persian army. Exhausted as he approached the leaders of the City of Athens, he staggered and gasped, "Rejoice! We Conquer!" and then collapsed.
24.8 miles is a fraction under 40000m.
The marathon distance was later changed as a result of the 1908 Olympic Games in London. That year, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria wanted the marathon race to begin at Windsor Castle outside the city so that the Royal family could view the start. The distance between the castle and the Olympic Stadium in London proved to be 26 miles. Organizers added extra yards to the finish around a track, 385 to be exact, so the runners would finish in front of the king and queen's royal box. Every Olympic marathon run since the 1908 Games has been a distance of 26 miles, 385 yards.
The added distance is approximately 2195m.

The additional few yards of the marathon (somewhat less then the 2195 meters) comes from Queen Victoria now anting to stand at the proper 26 miles mark but a point 400 yards futher on.

The modern marathon was first run at the 1896 Olympics at Athens. The distance was 40 k. In the 1908 Olympics the starting line was moved back 2195 meters to give the British Royal family a good view.

Oh.. and you don't have to line em up, and you can roll em and... I'm sure there are lots of other good reasons.

They are round because any other shape would fall through the hole to easily. Also you don't have to line them up.

Round is the only shape that won't fall through if shifted. A rectangular, triangular (actually any polygon)or oval cover will fall through if shifted.

There is no single correct answer to this question. I've read that it's a common interview question to see if someone can think through a problem that's outside of their area expertise. The "best" answer is probably that circular covers don't have to be aligned with the opening, although not being able to fall through the hole it covers is also good (but other shapes also provide that characteristic). Other responses including that circular pipes and covers are easiest to manufacture and provide the greatest ratio of accessability to the amount of material required to make them are also true. In the case of interviews, it's not a specific answer that matters so much as the reason(s) someone can give to support it.

two reasons, 1 the covers can not fall into the hole, 2 the covers are easy to move, simply flip them on edge and roll them away.

In the UK, most man hole covers are rectangular... We have the problem of round pegs going into square holes in order to do drain repairs...
