You and me both!
Interesting enough, my first "big" job was with Best Consulting, before they became Venturi Partners. I had several technical interviews, and believe it or not, I was never even asked about college.
About 3 weeks after I started with Best, one of the Sales guys happened to ask which college I had gone to. I replied that I hadn't, and that was the end of that!

I'm on my third technical 'real world' job and never once was I asked about college. Good thing because I'm a 2nd year drop-out.
It seemed like once I said I knew X, Y, and/or Z, they found their candidate. In the end, experience trumps all.

I'd be interested in a survey about how much money "College Graduate" developers make in contrast to those without a degree.
Based on my experience (16 years worth), I'd say the Non College Graduates make substantially more.
** Now for those of you with a degree that make a lot of money **, please let's not start a fight here ... I'm sure there are plenty of you, but you are the exception to the rule.

Where I live, if you don't have a college degree, then you won't make it past the resume filtering process.
So in this case, a college degree will help you out when facing a lot of job competition.

You have to be talking about a very narrow scope of people to think that Non College Graduates make substantially more than college graduates.
Your Non College Grads include you McDonald's, trash collectors, etc.
It seems like your statement is fully articulated by "Those Non College Graduates that were able to get a job programming (or start their own business, or basically generate income) and stick it out to gain good experience seem to make substantially more money than the typical college graduate"
But this is an unfair comparison. You are comparing the most dedicated, abmibitious or lucky non college grads to the average college grad (since you excluded the college grads that make a lot of money and you call them exceptions to the rule).
