I just finished building a prototype for work based on my dual core at home. (yeah, strange when home gets something before work, but... hey that's life sometimes)

We salvaged an old rackmount case and modded it with a window to show off the inards. There is actually a reason for this: being dual core it is as fast as our dual processors at a lower price, no hidden magic under the cover here, and the customer can peek. It took almost two months to get all the parts in, so some better parts are available now. That is okay, this was a prototype for future builds.

Thermaltake 650 powersupply for SLI
Asus P5ND2-SLI Deluxe Intel 775 (needed bios upgrade and XP SP2 before it recognized dual core)
Intel Pentium D 840
Aerocool GT-1000 Heatpipe Cooler (gold plated, looks darn nice and actually performs good)
2 gigs 667 memory as fast as I can get
EVGA 7800GTX 512mb graphics (one soon to be two in SLI)
One Seagate 7200.9 (Sata II) 160gig boot
Two Seagate 7200.9 (Sata II) 500gig in RAID0

It doesn't beat our fastest U320 SCSI system but it does beat out the U160's and all the hyperthreads we ever bought (and got performance complaints -- my software was designed to run multi-cpu and multi-core, never hyperthread). And it does only have two drives in RAID0 for performance.... If a 10k drive comes out in SATA II I may ask to replace the 500's for a RAID0 of 4 drives to see if I can tie our fastest.

The prime advantages: price and availability. No Xeons, no ECC memory, no SCSI, no Quadros, just high performance off the shelf components. Our hyperthread single CPUs were a disaster to offer to customers, I just overload one processor too easily. No more worries, multi-core is here to stay.

Just say no to splitting a core, double them instead.
