The Receive/Send or BeginReceive/BeginSend methods will return 0 bytes received/sent when the connection is lost or closed by the other host.

If the connection drops or gets severed, or when the timeout expires an exception will be thrown. I tend to send a 'blank' packet every 30-60 seconds, to force 'detection' of the network state. If its idle, it cant detect an error state.

One final note, since you can detect socket end of file (0 return of recv) you still need to plan for how to convey that event to your mainline code if it is not the same line of executing code. Typically a ManualResetEvent or Semaphore works fine for this. Particulary if we are talking about a multi-threaded model.

It might sound like a stupid question but I dont know any thing about it so I thought I better ask(btw I googled before asking)!
What is portal Development? or What are .NET portals?
Can you also direct me to any available .NET Portals??
Thanks in advance.

A portal is basically a flexible, highly customizable web application that allows users to have one place to get information on a wide array of topics. For instance, if your company has separate HR, CRM, project management, and time-tracking systems, a portal application could provide an interface to interact with all of these systems in one place. So, all your employees would have to know is how to get to the portal. Additionally, most portals have a goal of reduced sign-on (RSO), if not single sign-on (SSO), which basically means the portal can pass credentials to other applications, which will automatically log you on.
There are two major .NET portal tools: DotNetNuke[^] and Rainbow[^]. I'd suggest DNN because it has the larger community backing (users and 3rd party modules). Know that DNN is VB and Rainbow is C#. I don't like VB, but I still think DNN is the better solution and have chosen to use it for several of my clients.

Thank you very much for the explaination. What about BI(Business Intelligence) portals? are they the same as DotNetNuke and Rainbow or are they different in any way?
If yes then is there any .NET BI portal available as well?
Once again thanks a lot .

Business Intelligence (BI) is a term that refers to creating reports. Typically, a tool that professes to be a "BI" tool is very customizable. Examples are Crystal Reports and SQL Reporting Services. BI tools are separate from portals. A BI Portal would simply be a portal that displays BI information. This means you'll need two tools.

Thanks once again for celrifying that. Would a starter kit consider a Portal? or just a template?

And, of course, if you are doing custom module developement you can still develop them in C#.

I want to find the time when a given URI is last modified, I used HttpWebRequest.IfModifiedSince but the result return is the current dateTime. I want to compare the IfModifiedSince with the time last visit so that I would know whether the page has been changed since I last visit.
And did anyone know how to export my favorites using coding?

Hi, I want to use a COM component and I have the SDK for it, but how do I use it?
How do I make a "API call" from a C# application? Could you perhaps give me a demo application?

You can import any COM object in Visual studio by adding a reference to it in your project. There's P/Invoke for native win32 API's.
[DllImport(<dll_name>)]<br />
public static external void someFunction(...);

I am using Crystal Reports.Net 2002. How do I connect to a password protected Access database? I have gone through the Report expert and chosen the database and entered the password.
When I run the program however a "Database Login Screen" comes up asking for a: ServerName, Database, Login ID, and a Password. I tried to enter the Database path, I used "Admin" for the Login ID and the Password but all I got was "Login Failed please try again". I tried just entering the Database path and Password but got the same "Login Failed please try again" screen.

Are there any libraries available?

Unhandled Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: ExecuteNonQuery requires
an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is Closed.

at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at Examples.Class1.Main() in c:\documents and settings\sasi\my documents\
visual studio projects\examples\class1.cs:line 34

After making changes it again me the error connection is aready opened and tables are already existed in the database so i removed the previous changes and deleted the tables from the database .At present I am getting the below error which i cant resolved it.

in my coding I am dropping the tables if it exists else it should not bother about it and then creating the tables in the database ,if i give some other name for the database still it shows me the same error
Cannot drop the table 'emplo', because it does not exist in the system catalog.
Press any key to continue
any idea why it so !!
earlier i deleted the table manually from the Enterprise Manager is that the cause for it

By Manually deleting the table you did remove it, but there may still be a pointer to the table. In other words the application still thinks the table exists, but cant find it? Try 'Manually' recreating the table (only with minimum data, no need to create entire thing). Then using the proper commands empty the table, THEN delete it. that may fix the problem. otherwise you may need to use a maintenance routine to rebuild your database.

Hi,
I currently have a datagrid that is displaying items in an inventory. The user is able to modify inventory contents, and then there is a button to save the changes back to the SQL database.
What I would like to implement is something that will change the color of each row that the user has updated.
The only thing close that I've found is DataGrid.SelectionBackColor but the problem with that is that it changes the row color of the currently selected row, instead of row[x] in the DataGrid. So if the user moves the mouse to select a different row, the updated row loses the color, and the newly selected (non-updated) row gains it.
Anyone have a solution for a DataGrid to change the color of any row and then have it remain there?
I noticed you can't even get to an individual row with the DataGrid, there is no DataGrid.Row[x] feature. If there was, it might have a nice DataGrid.Row[x].BackColor property I could use.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

You can use obj.GetType() to find out what type object actually is. You can then cast it to the proper type.
Or you can do something like:
if(obj is int)
int x = (int)obj;
else if(obj is string)
string x = (string)obj;
else ..
