Hello,
I'm thinking of writing a program that contains a messaging system like MSN Messenger, with all communication going via a server on the internet. I went looking for examples and I did found some. However, I don't know which technique I should use. A webservice would be nice for the serverside, since I wouldn't need a dedicated server or something like that to run a 'standard' server application. But I didn't manage to determine if a webservice will fit all my needs, like events (an event fired on the server must trigger a function on the client side).
The most important thing is a speak function, so that two (maybe even more) connected clients can talk with each other (not P2P but also via the server). I really don't know if I can realize that with a webservice. Maybe someone could point me in the right direction? Also, I don't know yet how to realize such a 'speak' function. I didn't find anything on that subject (I only read something about an embedded feature in DirectX9 for sending audio over the web, but I prefer not to use DX).
Any help is much appreciated!
Thank you very much in advance.
Joost

Yes, you can install as many .NET frameworks as you like.

I read “Implement a Microsoft Word-like Object Model for Your .NET Framework Application” found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dndotnet/html/netwinforms.asp[^] and wondered if anyone has been able to create a .NET application that can act as an OLE Automation Server. By that I mean, I can insert an object, say an Excel worksheet, in my Word document and work with the spreadsheet inside Word. The spreadsheet is embedded in the Word document.
My question: Is it possible to create a .NET application that can be embedded in another application like Word? If so, does anyone have any code to show how this would be done?

Compile it with a managed c++ wrapper ( the amount of C that is not valid C++ is almost non-existant, unless it's C99 ). Or, write it into a COM object or plain DLL and interop that way.

I'm thinking about making a project in java because of portability but is there any evidence that the .net framework will be truly portable, like would anyone come out with a framework for other platforms, are there any attempts, i still haven't started the project that much and I would like to use c# better but if the supposed .net framework portability feature is just a theory then i will sadly have to use java

Mono runs on Linux, and Java is crap. What's the point of having a BAD UI on more than one platform ? Surely Lotus Notes taught us that ?
However, Mono does not have a UI component AFAIK. If I wanted to write a portable app, I'd write the business logic in C++ and recode the UI natively on each platform, so that it took advantage of the features of each platform.

This is 'not at all a good comment' cause each techinology have it's own limits and merit.

True. But, I've used J2EE, and I found it to be crap. Sorry.

Hi,
I am working on an application that can run both remotly or locally.
The Listener is publishing 3 objects using .NET remoting. The Client has only the UI, all the calls to the database and the reporting are done through the Listener.
The remote computer that hosts the listener is also hosting the Crystal Report, .rpt, files.
The Client has also a Crystal Viewer. When the user clicks on a button, the Client sends the request along with an ID to the Listener that upon the ID provided selects a .rpt file from the server's disk, loads the file into a CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument object, sets the parameters to that report (datasource, user/pass) and returns it to the client. The Client receives the object, binds it to the viewer and displays it. At least that is what is supposed to do...
Now if I set my application to run locally, without the listener, but using the same code, same objects, to load the .rpt file, everything works fine. The moment I set it up to work remotly, the system stops at the Load() method (the bold line).
It does not throw me any exception, it just stays there forever
<br />
...<br />
ReportDocument oRptDoc = new ReportDocument();<br />
<br />
string sFullPath = "test.rpt";<br />
<br />
oRptDoc.Load(sFullPath);<br />
<br />
CrystalDecisions.Shared.TableLogOnInfo crLogonInfo;<br />
crLogonInfo = oRptDoc.Database.Tables[0].LogOnInfo;<br />
<br />
string sDataBaseName = "my database";<br />
string sServerName = "my server";<br />
string sUser = "my user";<br />
string sPassword = "my password";<br />
<br />
crLogonInfo.ConnectionInfo.ServerName = sServerName;<br />
crLogonInfo.ConnectionInfo.UserID = sUser.ToUpper();<br />
crLogonInfo.ConnectionInfo.Password = sPassword.ToUpper();<br />
crLogonInfo.ConnectionInfo.DatabaseName = sDataBaseName;<br />
<br />
oRptDoc.Database.Tables[0].ApplyLogOnInfo(crLogonInfo);<br />
<br />
return oRptDoc;<br />
<br />
I hope somebody has any ideea...
Thank you,
Virgil

Is there anything in VS or an addon that will allow me to print out the entire project in one click. I used to work in VB6 and there was a program called starprint that would do that. i could probably write my own, but i am looking for something already done.

No such tricks available. Better you could write one and submit to CP.

I'm working on a project written in C# / ASP.NET, and we're using crystal reports for em..reports. We're now in trouble, because our database is designed in a way that several companies can work on it at the same time, and the application is too.. our problem are reports, because most of them have a company logo in the top right corner and..it would be bad to show the same logo for ten different companies.
Any ideas how to deal with this?? Is there a way to put a link to an image dynamically? It would be terrible if we were to create a new report for each new company..
I'm not sure if I've explained this well enough.. Any ideas are welcome..

As per my knowledge there is no such techinics which will load report image dynamically based on some condition.
In case, if you want to show different the company logo's, you can store respective logos in some table. Once that is done then try to bind that feild which contain image to your report based on some company specific values.

Hell, that's exactly the thing I'd like to do OR, I can kill the man who thought of placing the logo on reports. Blast it. If need be, I'll go to work armed ask for a specific name, but the root of this problem will come to light
Darn.. I guess we'll dump the logo in the end or something.. But I still keep thinking that there must be a way of doing just that..

Maybe this is a stupid question, nevertheless, is it possible to interface a C++ class library in C#.
Some good reasons do this:
1. There are literally thousands (millions?) of C++ class libraries around in cyberspace, it seems a terrible waste not to able to use them.
2. I still believe that good conventionally written number crunching C++ code is (far) more efficient than C# / .NET code (e.g. arbitrary precision DSP).
3. C# / .NET code is (of course) much more suitable to write Windows / UI code. Combining the two should work out just great.
InterOp is possible with plain C DLL's and many articles are available to this subject. Is there anybody out there who encountered the same problem and has some suggestions.
