i am writing a control and have inherited from system.windows.forms.control and is there any way to supress certain functionality like the backcolor and font properties because i have no use for these with the control would be greatfull for any help and replies

Assuming you are running windows xp, Right click on a text file and click open with -->choose program.., then select your program from the list (or alternatively browse for it) then check the check box on the bottom of the dialog that says "Always use the selected program...."

I am trying to insert data into a database, but it's not working. Before I put the try...catch in I was getting a "it must be an updatable query".
So what I'm thinking is that if it isn't my code, or SQL statement. Then it must be that it doesn't have access to the database. Could someone tell me how I go about giving it access?
Here is my code, just in case its a problem with any of my code.

Surely you should be closing the connection on a valid query as well as one that throws an exception? If so, then you should consider moving that code to a Finally block. Other than that, your catch block does nothing other than swallow the exception (which is bad practice - if you have a catch you must do something with it otherwise it just hides potential bugs) so you should consider removing the Catch block.
I have to admit that I don't know much about Access databases these days, but a comment I saw in the last couple of weeks would suggest that you might want to look at the permissions of your webapplication directory. Access needs to have writable permission on the folder the database is in because it needs to create a file.
If you are going to give write access to the database through your web application you should consider putting the database in the subfolder of its own so that the web application does not have write access on its root folder - as this is a potential security risk.
Don't know if it will help, but it is possibly worth a go.

The path C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\webapplication5 must have write/modify permissions otherwise you restrict the database to readonly. Access throws this error as if it were related to the sql. a bit odd but thats Microsoft.

the application was running well in one of the PC .. I uninstalled it cuz the connecting string and DB security need to be added, after installing it i got this error when i try to run an imbeded report
System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for "CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument" threw an exception. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154): COM object with CLSID {CF76A644-314B-404D-8D45-F08B51FF990B} is either not valid or not registered.
the application is working fine in one of the pc's, it was installed more than 2 months ago. But now when trying to install it in other PCs i get this error?
Please note that i have included the merge modules for CR10...so what could be missing?

I have an application in which if an error occurs then it should go to database and get the exception message.
Now the problem how can i identify types of exceptions. I know that there
exception types defined. But like in VB if there was exception number then it would have been easier to refer it from the database.
Cause one ExceptionType can have different exception messages i mean SqlException can be like conncetion not open or invalid insert statement but it will show only sqlexception.
Does anyone have any idea how to solve this.

But, the exception has an exception message already. It is in a propery called Message.
I think I understand what you want to do. I just don't understand why.
If you were going the other way and logging exceptions into the database then I could understand things. But, what advantage or benefit do you get with pulling a message out of a database when the exception already has one.

YOu are right there is no reason why i should go to database and fetch message from it when there is already one.
The reason is there are times when we general user might not understand the message, it might make sense to a developer but not to an ordinary user.
Also i am logging error, that is not a problem. The problem is how to distuinguish between exception as SQLException can be "connection not established" or "Syntax error in statement".

In the case of SqlExceptions you do have a Number in the exception (and the SqlException can contain many Errors) the number corresponds to the value of the error column in the master..sysmessages table.

Yes, SQL does have a number but that just solves the sql exception not other like XML or IO which doesn't have a number.
I was hoping for a fit for all situation(or almost everyone).

I might have found the solution. I tried "ex.TargetSite.Attributes" and it gave me a unique number for the exception.
I haven't fully tested it but i hope this might work.
