Start by not using VB.NET, I'd use C++ for this, for sure.

Next, if your first approach is to ask such a vague question in a forum, wait a few years and try again.

Microsoft has a speech recognition SDK if you just want to add it to an app you're working on. I have no idea how good it is.

Considering that many organisations spend millions of dollars with dozens of software developers on the problem I don't think you will get much of a concise answer. I would suggest googling for academic papers on the subject as a starting point.

Textbox enter behaviour

Hi,

I have an input form with quite a few textboxes. When I tab to one of these textboxes I want it to highlight the complete data and not just put the cursor at the end of the data. This means that the user can overtype the data instead of deleting and then typing.

Any help appreciated

Give this a try:

To handle one text box:

To handle multiple text boxes:

Hi,
We have VB6 application up and running having SQL 2k as database. It has about 50 and more user using at pick hrs.

Now the problem is, sometime, few user got error message and kicked off from the application. I analyze windows eventlog and found that type of error is DrWatson and some exception thrown for multibytetowidchar kind of.

I really don't have any idea what happening here. If anybody have any little idea abt this I can give descriptive and exact explaination to them and will discuss further.

Without the EXACT error message, it's not even possible to do a meaning ful search on it. Since we have no idea what your code is even doing at the time of the problem and MultiByteToWideChar is part of the Win32 and is used inside all VB6 apps extensively, this could be, literally, caused by anything in your app.

Error message on User's screen
"Child.exe has generted erros and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being create."

Error message in error log - error log retrive form event viewer of administrative tool.
Type – Information
Source – DrWatson
Description - The application, , generated an application error The error occurred on 07/19/2005 @ 08:20:47.979 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 7C5B89AE (MultiByteToWideChar)

Can you help me out with this information.
If you want something more / else... write me up.

I am trying to find out the pattern of the error.

There's just not enough information to pin this down, but, it could be caused by a badly formed SQL statement. If your code is using string concatenation to build SQL queries, like

Dim mySQLStatement As String
mySQLStatement = "SELECT * FROM sometable WHERE field1=" & somevariable & " AND field2 Like '" & something & "'"

you'll problably have problems that you can't trace down.

You might also try upgrading the MDAC to the latest version.

This is one of those problems that is very generic in nature and is not going to be solved easily. If you don't have to source code for the app, you're pretty much out of luck.

We got the source code at last...
Now what would be your approach to trace down this proble.
What you suggest to eliminate this error?
Just let you know, that this problem is not consistant and pops up in few forms till now. After kicking out from the application, user do the same thing again, it will work fine.

Put in instrumentation code to log what is going on by follow what functions are being called with what parameters, what return values are coming back from functions, and sql queries.

Hi All,

I have a requirement for shading the backcolor of certain rows of the Datagrid.

Lets assume my table has 4 rows in it. I want to display the alternate rows in different colours and if two consecutive rows is grouped for some reason they need to show the same color. (Can't Use Datagrid's Alternatebackcolor and backcolor).

Case 1

Row 1 & 3 backcolor as Pale green
Row 2 & 4 backcolor as Dark green ( Easy with the above said properties)

Case 2

Row 1 backcolor as Pale green
Rows 2 & 3 backcolor as Dark green
Row 4 backcolor as Pale green

Tried loads of samples but can't achieve these 2 cases with any of them.

can someone help ?

there is no way that u can do it in DataGrid as far as i know. . . u can try MS FlexGrid

You don't connecto to the machine, you connect to a server running on it. What are you trying to connect to?

Im supposed to try and connect to a file thats on the AS400, to see if i can connect to it. i'm very new at this and this is my first actual attempt.

i'm supposed to be able to view the contents of the file.
what do i need to be able to do this? Confused | :confused:

My problem is nobody seems to know how this works here.
i have been asked to test the connection to the AS400 using vb.net
i have the server ip address, i have the user id and password to log into the as400. what or rather how would i test the connection then.
is it possible for a detailed explanation.
i need to display the file contents from a specified library into a data grid, tell me or give me an example. Confused | :confused:

I’m building an application that is used to manage project data such as CAD files, images, etc.

At the beginning of a project, a ‘rough’ directory structure that holds project information is created. This structure changes throughout the process of working on the project. The changes include: File/Folder renaming, deletion, adding and moving.

I’m trying to think of a user friendly interface where these file/folder operations can take place. I’m thinking of something similar to a Windows Explorer type window but with the ability to move folders up and down the tree. Or, even better, drag a folder to another location.

Has anybody ever seen any examples similar to this? Any ideas or suggestions??

This isn't supported in Visual Studio .NET 2002 or 2003 with using a 3rd party plug-in, like VBCommentor[^]. Though in 2005, this is fully supported.
