I also stopped for a few years. When I started again, I did VB (because I knew Basic). I guess that's where everything is decided
|
|
|
|

it's almost very easy
Dim R(,) [as your datatype]
Private sub init()
'now i know
redim r(x,y)
end sub

I have a field in SQlServer Database which name is "PublishingDate". In it, Date is stored in that format i.e
3/28/2005
In my vb.net program i use select query to fetch all the records of column "PublishingDate"
I use the query below to just select year out of whole Date and display result in a combobox.
"select distinct DATEPART(yy,publishingdate) from books"
Everything will be fine.
In Combobox it show all "years" like 2000,2001,2002,2003
I want that when user clicks on any year in a combobox like '2000', it will display results according to that query
Select * from books where publishingdate='" & ComVal.text & "'
But this query cannot display the result because in database date is stored in this format "3/8/2005"
Hope you got the meaning.
I use this query, but it cannot display the result.
SELECT * From books where publishingdate IN (select Datepart(yy,publishingdate)from books)
How can i do this?
Plz help me in this regard.

I take it this means the date is stored as a string ?
SELECT * From books where publishingdate LIKE '%/' + publishingyear

have you tried this?
Select * from books where year(publishingdate) = '" & ComVal.text & "'

I am making a Active X control that is a textbox. However i am having trouble making the textbox the same size as the control. For example if you go to put this control onto a form the text box is a static size, whereas the control that it sits on is resizeable. How do I make the textbox resizeable with the control?
|
|
|
|
|
very simple
go to the resize event of a control ( not the textbox )
write this
' if you need fix size then
txt.width=100
txt.height=25
' if you need the size of control then
txt.width=me.width
txt.height=me.height
' remember if the textbox is not multi line = true. then height will not change

I wonder if anyone can help. I am new to VB.Net but done VB 6
I have a Datagrid on a form and want to know how you do the following VB.Net
1..Put columns headers on grid i.e. ID, Forename, Surname etc
2..Format the columns i.e. length, color
3..Populate the datagrid e.g. Dataset returns x records want to loop the dataset until eof.
4..A side point, want to put column headers on without associating it with a dataset
Can someone also recommend a good VB.Net sample site

well lets try
1. when you select the record from database use alias for the names I do this. like Select t1 as Name from TableName. or you can change the name like ds.tables(0).column(0).name="Name" ' I am writing in the forum so may be missing any thing
2. I have to go to vb.net which I dont have right now. sitting not on my machine.
3. for looping you can do this
dim count as integer
' there is nothing eof. only number of records and you need a for loop like this
for count=0 to ds.tables(0).rows.count-1
msgbox ds.tables(0).rows(count).item("FieldName")
next
for populating in datagrid
datagrid.datasource=ds or
datagrid.datasource=ds.tables(0) ' better one
4. I dont think it is possible. you are binding the dataset with Datagrid so column should exist there. what you can do is to create a new column and attach it with datatable under dataset.
may this helps...

Hi
I am working on a samll app to identify and list out the SQL servers running in the network and pass on to a combobox to select one of them. But dont have a clear idea how to use ODBC in my code...I wud be thankful if someone can show me a way out...
I have seen some articles written in C++ but I need some code in visual basic.NET
Hmmm...Keeping my fingers crossed

Here[^] is a C# version of the code your looking for. It can be converted pretty easily to VB.NET.

Hello there
I am working on an imaging application now a days. I want to use the image format (like jpg,gif,tif etc) which consume less space and image does not loose any visual effect. like when user selects the image to upload I want to convert it into the required image type before saving it.
I have seen couple of applications which convert the image into Tif with very small size but when I do so the image size grows enormously.
any suggestions would be appreciated..

Sorry, but these two requirements are mutually exclusive of each other.
If you want to use less space, any decent compression is going to be a lossy one. Image information will be lost! If you want the best possible image quality, then your going to have to use a format closer to the native format of the device that captured the image.
What format is best depends on what your doing and what "acceptable image quality" means to you.

well Dave thanks for reply . While reading your message I got the idea instead of using auto compression I shall ask user to do it him self . I shall provide one software compression utility in my application and he will compress it as much as he wants and can view it visually to make it best.

jpg is lossy
gif is 256 colour
bmp is huge
I'm not sure if tif is lossy or not, but I'd suggest that if your tifs are too big, then tif probably ( like jpg ) allows you to set the compression rate, which means it's probably lossy.
It doesn't matter - to do any work with images, they need to be in raw format in memory ( in fact, there's no other way to deal with them in any meaningful way ). So let GDI+ offer it's full range of image formats, and let your users make their own decisions about space/quality.

How to make date selection work like if i want to select all data which the date was between 5/11/2005 and 6/7/2005.
And how to calculate if the differences from date above is 34 days, or how many month differences.
So far im using dataview.rowfiler to filter filled datatable from certain date to date, like this:
dv.RowFilter = "date < '" & DateTimePicker1.Value.Date & "'"
but sure above code doest work(not error) and return no value.

go to index of your MSDN
write dataview
in the list click searching under dataview and I hope this will solve your problem

I have a project done in VB.net, that I just cannot make work. Would someone be willing to let me e-mail it to them and explain to me how to fix it. TIA

if you could explain it little more then it would be easy for us to do this.
by the way you can mail me the project at

i don't agree, the question is public, that means everyone can answer, but also everyone could read the issue of the problem....
if one answer by e-mail, so we lose badly this point of view...
