We've forked out the money to get audited so we have accurate and unbiased figures on how many people are viewing the site per month. The include is meant to have almost zero impact on load time. Can you please do a tracert to the realmedia server and send it to me? I'll yell loudly for you if there's a problem.

The only times i see problems are when i'm connected through VPN... unfortunately, tracert doesn't do anything useful in that scenario, as i'm using a proxy. For the time being, i'm just grounding the server name in my hosts file on my work machine. It hasn't caused significant delays on my home machine, so i'll leave that be.

Hi,
I would like to suggest a few things in order to improve the article rating system:
1.)
Is it possible to add a download counter to codeproject? When writing articles this could give a better indication for the popularity than the popularity as it is at the moment or the number of hits.
As the author i would like to know how many people actually downloaded the archives in order to estimate if it is worth to put more work on it. Also if you include the number of downloads you will get a better estimate for the overall popularity of an article.
2.)
Why not include the number of forum entries into the popularity. After all if people ask about a project they are interested in it.
3.)
Members should be allowed to change their vote after an article has been updated. Sometimes I find articles which I rated badly but the article changed since and the original vote does no longer reflect my opinion.

I originally just posted a link to a page that had the text of the article I was making reference to...but the page also had adult humor, so I modified the original message text replacing the link with just the text of the article...later, I found other links that only contained the article and tried to modify the post again trying to replace the (long) text with one of the newly discovered link (in consideration of those who still have to deal with dialup). That is when the "oops" showed up...

Ok... first thing... the one-point vote is not mine. 
Reverse Engineering is generally a bad idea. Did you ever read software licences (EULA)?
Most companies don't allow reverse engineering their software. This is an official site, and so I think that "illegal" discussions will just make trouble.
C Programming board doesn't many any sense either, because we have a VC++ forum for both c and c++.
A driver discussion board is a nice idea, but the problem will be that there are not many driver programmers, so the forum will be as recently visited as the managed c++ board  .
OS development board? Why should we need such a thing? It's a microsoft site, so why supporting OS development?
Maths board is a good idea, I also proposed it some month ago. Chris read it, said that it's a nice idea, but nothing happend so far  .
Debugging board is also a nice idea, but all your other boards won't have many visitors.

Reverse engineering IS legal in most countries, patent stealing is not.

One thing to keep in mind -- Reverse Engineering is legal if it's for the purpose of maintaining compatibility. This is very typical when getting code to work on one system to another or implementing a product feature. I do this at my job, I know people who have worked at other places (such as star dock) who have done the same for the same reason.

General Discussions is a redundant forum.
Maybe the following forums should be added as a replacement for "General Discussions":
Application Software Discussion - talking about application software only
Software Under Development - talking about software you're writing, but not talking about the coding part.
Hardware Discussion - duh...
And while I'm on the subject:
I still think that CP should adopt a better message board setup. I think something like PHP-BBS would be better than what we have now. It takes FOREVER to scrollback through posts if you simply want to monitor a thread in the current system.
And how about an honest-to-god IRC channel for live chat? I say "honest-to-god" because I prefer to use a real IRC client instead of web-based solutions because a real client app is *faster* than anything you could do through the browser. For people that insist on using the browser, you could still setup a feed from an IRC chat room.

I've just been browsing the C# controls section to see if anybody had written an article on a control I was looking for. And boy, there are a lot of articles on that page (http://www.codeproject.com/cs/miscctrl/[^]) but then splitting up the page is already on your to-do list.
I think it may be a good idea to have a thumbnail of an article's primary image on the page. That way I could see the kind of control that the article describes without having to load up each page that sounds like it matches my needs.
